Summary
South Central Child Development, Inc. (SCCD) provides Head Start preschool and family services within 16 counties in South Central South Dakota since 1986. SCCD is seeking a highly motivated individual in Bon Homme, Davison, Douglas, Hutchinson or Yankton County to work with families to help them to prepare their children for school.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for working with parents during home visits, providing developmentally appropriate early childhood education and development guidance by following the Parents as Teachers Curriculum
Provide weekly home visits to each family between 1.5 hours (one child households) and 2 hours (two children households)
Follow the program format of early childhood education and developmentally appropriate practices and family services during weekly home visits
Assists parents in planning and carrying out follow-up activities that are developmentally appropriate
Develop educational activities that families can easily complete with their children at little to no cost
Support parents' efforts to guide the development and education of their child through the development of an Individual School Readiness Plan
Assist in promoting within the parents a sense of self-worth as a result of their direct participation in the education of their child
Demonstrate a warm, accepting attitude toward Head Start Preschool families
Establish a relationship of trust with enrolled families
Meet with parent committees and conduct parent education sessions when requested
Keep accurate, up-to-date progress records on each child and family and comply with other required record keeping and reporting (including any required computer based data systems)
Assist with developmental, vision and hearing screenings as needed and directed by the Area Leader
Assist the Health Coordinator and Area Leader in carrying out health services of the Head Start Preschool program and encouraging completion of all health screenings, exams and any follow-up treatment
Identify community resources that can serve families
Follow program format to conduct sixteen (16) socializations each school year
Implement the Individual Educational Plan for children with special needs provided by the local school district and under the direction of the Disabilities Manager
Provide transition services for families in cooperation with LEA's
Recruit families for Head Start Preschool services and assist families in completion of the application and verification of income
Distribute program information regarding program activities and goals
Complete family service assessments and family partnership agreements
Facilitate any follow-up resources needed and materials supporting families in accessing community resources
Provide ongoing support to families in achievement of family goals
Demonstrate commitment to eliminating stereotypes of low income and minority groups in the communities
Provide in-kind training and collect in-kind from parents
Attend all required program trainings
Other duties as assigned by the Area Leader, Leadership and Administrative Teams.
Other Information
This position is remote, but the candidate must travel to families located in Bon Homme, Davison, Douglas, Hutchinson or Yankton County (and possibly surrounding counties). This position typically works Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:30pm, but may occasionally include some evening hours. Additionally, this position works approximately 9 months during the year, but is paid out over 12 months. The starting pay for this position ranges from $42,150 to $47,950 annually, depending on education.

Qualifications and Skills
Required:
Must be willing to live in Bon Homme, Davison, Douglas, Hutchinson or Yankton County, SD, or relocate to Bon Homme, Davison, Douglas, Hutchinson or Yankton County, SD (neighboring county residence may be considered)
Must have a valid driver's license
Must be willing to meet the travel needs of the position
Must be willing to adapt to flexible work hours, including some evenings to meet the needs of families
Must be willing to obtain a CDA (Child Development Associate) Credential if required (determined by the candidate's education)
Must attend Parents as Teachers training
Must be willing to attend training and continuing education to maintain a CDA as required by the Head Start Program Performance Standards
Must facilitate local parent committee meetings, parent education sessions and parent programs, encouraging fatherhood and youth activities
Must be able to effectively and productively work with people of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds
Must be able to work cooperatively with the team, agency leadership and administrative personnel
Must be able to maintain confidential information
Must be able to work effectively (individually and in a group) and have good communication and people skills with other staff and enrolled families
Must document and report suspected child abuse and neglect by following the program's reporting procedures
Must be able to efficiently use a computer
Must be willing to complete First Aid and CPR certification (provided by the agency) within the first 3 months of employment.
Must be able to actively interact with preschool children, which includes having good dexterity with the ability to lift up to 40 pounds, push, pull, carry, climb, balance, kneel, sit, stand, walk, bend and squat.
Must complete mandatory background screens as part of your employment in a Head Start Preschool program (including State and FBI fingerprinting, Reports of Child Abuse and Neglect screening, Sex Offender Registries, health screener and employment physical).
Preferred:
Degree in Early Childhood Education with Teaching certificate - OR
Degree in Human Services, Behavior Science (major in Human Development, Social Services, Adult Education or Home Economics)
Home Based CDA Credential
Previous experience with Head Start Preschool, early childhood education or preschool programs and/or with adult education and instruction
Possess knowledge of child development principles.
