Job Title: Direct Support Professional (DSP)
Reports To: DDP
Department: Home and Community-Based Services
Location: Varies (Community-based / In-home)

Position Summary:

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides person-centered support and assistance to individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) receiving services through Georgia’s Medicaid Waiver programs (NOW/COMP). The DSP promotes the individual’s independence, integration, and inclusion in their community and ensures services are delivered in accordance with DBHDD standards and the individual’s approved service plan.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Implement Individual Service Plans (ISP) and support individuals in achieving their personal goals.

Provide assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as grooming, hygiene, toileting, mobility, and feeding as needed.

Support individuals in engaging with community activities, social experiences, and recreational opportunities.

Monitor and ensure individual safety and report any incidents, concerns, or risks immediately following agency and DBHDD reporting protocols.

Assist with transportation to appointments, activities, and errands as needed.

Accurately document service delivery, goal progress, and relevant observations in daily notes and required forms.

Administer medications and perform health-related tasks if trained and delegated under Georgia’s Proxy Caregiver regulations (as applicable).

Respond appropriately to emergencies and behavioral crises using approved techniques, including behavior support and crisis intervention when trained.

Promote client rights, confidentiality, and dignity in every interaction.

Communicate effectively with the individual’s care team including case managers, nurses, and agency supervisors.

Attend all mandatory training sessions, staff meetings, and in-service updates required by DBHDD and the employer.

Qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years of age.

High school diploma or GED required.

At least one year of experience providing care to individuals with developmental disabilities preferred.

Must have a valid Georgia driver’s license, a reliable means of transportation, and a good driving record (if transporting individuals).

Clear criminal background check and TB screening as required by DBHDD and Georgia regulations.

CPR/First Aid certification (must be current).

Completion of required DBHDD training within specified timelines (including Person-Centered Practices, Human Rights, and Health & Safety).

Proxy Caregiver training and delegation (if assisting with health-related activities).

Ability to read, write, and understand English to maintain documentation and follow care plans.
