Heavy Duty Mechanic
Location: 1805 Harmac Road, Nanaimo, BC
Department: Shop & Fleet Operations
Reports to: Head Mechanic
Milestone Equipment Contracting is looking for a skilled and reliable Heavy Duty Mechanic to join our growing Shop & Fleet Operations team. This role is critical to keeping our fleet safe, efficient, and field-ready; supporting everything from civil construction equipment to trucks and small tools.

Position Summary
The Heavy Duty Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining Milestone’s fleet of heavy equipment, trucks, and support assets. Working closely with the Head Mechanic, Resource Manager, Shop Foreman, and field teams, this position ensures our equipment is safe, compliant, and operational to support production needs.
This role is suited for a technically strong, safety-focused mechanic who enjoys problem-solving, teamwork, and maintaining high standards in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance & Repair
Diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, and small tools.
Complete routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and scheduled servicing.
Troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems.
Perform field repairs and mobile service calls when required.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure all work is completed to safety and regulatory standards.
Maintain accurate service records and inspection reports in SiteDocs and internal systems.
Identify safety concerns, defects, and non-compliance issues; report promptly.
Support safe work practices through clean, organized workspaces and consistent adherence to Milestone safety protocols.
Documentation & Workflows
Complete daily work orders and service documentation for payroll and maintenance tracking.
Assist in planning and prioritizing repairs based on project and production needs.
Collaborate with the Shop Foreman to maintain accurate fleet information, parts usage, and service history.
Communication & Team Support
Communicate clearly with drivers, operators, and supervisors regarding equipment status, repairs, and requirements.
Coordinate with the Shop Foreman on scheduled service, downtime, and equipment availability.
Support a positive, professional shop environment.
Parts, Tools & Inventory
Assist in sourcing, ordering, and tracking parts and shop supplies.
Maintain tools and equipment to ensure reliability and readiness.
Support overall shop organization, yard cleanliness, and fleet readiness.
Responsible for supplying and maintaining your own tools.
Qualifications & Attributes
Certified Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (Red Seal) or Apprentice with relevant experience.
Strong diagnostic skills with experience in heavy equipment, diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair documentation.
Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail and quality workmanship.
Clear, professional communication skills.
Ability and willingness to coach and mentor upcoming Apprentices.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Experience with digital documentation tools (SiteDocs, Excel, Google Suite) is an asset.
Welding and minor fabrication required.
Relevant experience with Cat, John Deere, and Hitachi equipment is preferred.
Work Conditions
Full-time, Monday–Friday (with flexibility for overtime during peak seasons).
Service-truck-based role with work both in the shop and in the field.
Fast-paced shop environment with a variety of equipment and repair tasks.
PPE and safety gear required; supplied where applicable.
Compensation
Hourly wage rabge: $35–$45/hour, depending on experience & certification.
Full-time role with overtime available.
