About this role

We are seeking an experienced Heath, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Officer to join our Project Operations Team.

As the HSE Officer, you will work closely with the project management, construction crews, engineers, subcontractors and client representatives to embed safe work practices and strong environmental controls. You’ll support the consistent application of established policies, procedures and controls, and help deliver practical, on-the-ground solutions that keep people safe and minimise environmental impacts.

Responsibilities

Promote and actively support a strong HSE culture; lead by example and coach teams and subcontractors.

Support implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of the Project HSE Management System aligned to company, client and legislative requirements.

Conduct site inspections, audits and observations; identify hazards/environmental risks and verify effective controls and close-out of actions.

Support/lead development and review of HSE documentation (procedures, risk assessments, SWMS, JSAs, management plans and methodologies).

Deliver inductions, toolbox talks and targeted training to reinforce safe and compliant work practices.

Participate in incident, hazard and near-miss investigations; identify root causes and implement corrective/preventative actions.

Prepare and contribute to HSE reporting (daily/weekly/monthly), including leading/lagging indicators and performance commentary.

Ensure environmental compliance with approvals and permit conditions; maintain environmental records and reporting.

Undertake environmental inspections and audits; monitor controls and performance indicators (e.g., noise, water, waste and resources).

Liaise with clients, regulators, subcontractors and suppliers on HSE matters to achieve compliant, best-practice outcomes.

Assist with Return to Work (RTW) processes as required.

Support compliance with relevant systems/standards (e.g., ISO 14001, AS/NZS 4801, OFSC requirements).

About you

Minimum 5 years’ experience in HSE and/or environmental management, ideally in construction, civil, pipeline or similar project environments.

Strong working knowledge of safety legislation and environmental regulatory requirements; confident applying standards in a practical site setting.

Experience conducting inspections/audits and managing action close-out.

Proven incident investigation capability (ICAM/TapRooT desirable).

Highly effective written and verbal communication skills; able to influence and build strong relationships across multiple stakeholders.

Organised and outcomes-focused, with strong problem-solving skills and a continuous improvement mindset.

Flexible and willing to travel and relocate short-term as project needs require.

Qualifications (essential/desirable)

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science/Environmental Engineering (or related), and/or Bachelor’s degree in WHS/Occupational Health (or related).

Diploma or Certificate IV in WHS (highly regarded).

Certificate IV TAE (Trainer/Assessor) – desirable.

Lead Auditor qualification – desirable.

Experience with Tasmanian and Victorian regulatory bodies – desirable.

Role locations & travel

This role requires flexibility to support project planning and delivery across multiple locations. You will commence in our Brisbane or Perth office (Melbourne considered) before attending site for the execution of works. Following the planning phase, the role will transition to a project-based position with regular travel between Waratah Bay (Victoria) and Heybridge (Tasmania).
