Job Description
The Health Information Specialist/Medical Records position is a full-time Monday through Friday position (37.5 hours/week).
This individual maintains medical records in accordance with federal and state guidelines for our 120-bed skilled nursing facility, ensuring that the complete medical records program is appropriately maintained.
Responsibilities include:
Assisting in developing procedures to ensure medical records are properly completed, coded, signed, indexed, etc., before filing;
Filing active and inactive medical records;
Closing medical records;
Collecting, assembling, inspecting medical records areas;
Getting medical records when requested by authorized personnel;
Maintaining a log of authorized disclosures of medical records;
Assisting business office personnel as required;
Assisting in admission, transfer, and discharge procedures as necessary;
Preparing reports as directed;
Ensuring records and files are properly stored;
Ordering, receiving, distributing, and vouchering medical supplies, as needed;
Participating in facility surveys, as requested;
Responding to communications from all sources in a timely way;
Reporting discrepancies, problems, and concerns;
Following United Church of Christ Homes code of conduct, HIPAA guidelines;
Reporting suspected or known incidents of fraud, abuse of policies, or unauthorized attempts to access resident or facility information;
Representing the organization in a positive manner;
Creating and maintaining an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positivity; and,
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Previous medical records experience in long-term care environment is preferred;
High school diploma required;
Ability to type and working knowledge of medical terminology is required.
