JOB SUMMARY
The Head of Quality Assurance and HSSE leads and governs all Quality, Food Safety, Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental systems across feed mill operations. The role ensures regulatory compliance, product integrity, and safe, environmentally responsible operations while embedding a strong culture of quality, safety, accountability, and continuous improvement through close collaboration with operational and senior leadership teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Quality Assurance
Establish, implement, maintain, and continuously improve the Quality Management System (QMS) for the feed mill.
Ensure full compliance with GMP any other relevant quality system/standard as determined by the company.
Oversee quality control testing of raw materials, in-process products, and finished products, ensuring accuracy, traceability, and integrity of data.
Input and verify ingredient specifications, nutritional profiles, formulations, and finished product releases.
Lead internal and external audits, inspections, and certification processes; manage corrective and preventive actions.
Record, analyze, and report data from quality checks; identify trends and implement corrective actions.
Investigate quality deviations, customer complaints, and non-conformances, ensuring root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Ensure full traceability, recall readiness, and crisis management procedures are in place and tested.
HSSE (Health, Safety, Security & Environment):
Develop, implement, and enforce HSSE policies, procedures, and standards in line with legal, regulatory, and organizational requirements.
Monitor and interpret existing and emerging health, safety, environmental, and biosecurity legislation to ensure ongoing compliance.
Lead hazard identification, risk assessments, and incident and near-miss investigations, conducting root cause analysis and implementing corrective and preventative actions.
Establish, maintain, and manage SOPs for incident reporting, ensuring all employees and management are trained and familiar with the process.
Promote a strong safety culture through visible leadership, training programs, toolbox talks, and employee engagement initiatives.
Oversee disaster and emergency preparedness and response, including fire safety, chemical handling, environmental controls, and business continuity measures.
Organize and conduct emergency drills and safety training to ensure staff are prepared to respond effectively to incidents.
Ensure the maintenance of a fully equipped first aid and emergency response facility.
Monitor HSSE performance through KPIs, inspections, audits, incident data, and trend analysis; report findings and recommendations to senior management.
Oversee environmental management activities, including waste management, emissions control, and environmental protection initiatives.
Ensure contractor and visitor compliance with all HSSE requirements while on-site.
Maintain site security controls, including perimeter security and asset protection, in alignment with HSSE standards.
Oversee claims related to employee, equipment, and vehicular incidents, ensuring proper reporting, investigation, and resolution in line with HSSE policies.
Production:
Partner with Production and Maintenance teams to ensure quality and HSSE requirements are embedded into daily operations.
Review production processes to ensure consistency, efficiency, and compliance with quality and safety standards.
Support equipment validation, calibration, and preventive maintenance from a quality and safety perspective.
Participate in production planning discussions to ensure quality and HSSE risks are identified and mitigated.
Process Optimization:
Identify systemic risks and opportunities for continuous improvement across quality, safety, and environmental performance.
Lead improvement initiatives that enhance product integrity, operational efficiency, and HSSE outcomes.
Support the introduction of new raw materials, products, technologies, or processes through structured risk assessments and trials.
Cross-Department Collaboration:
Work closely with Engineering, Maintenance, Logistics, Finance, Farm Operations, and external stakeholders.
Serve as the primary point of contact for regulators, auditors, customers, and certification bodies related to QA and HSSE.
Provide regular reports, dashboards, and recommendations to senior management on quality and HSSE performance.
People Management
Lead, manage, and develop the QA and HSSE teams, including supervisors, technicians, and officers.
Define roles, responsibilities, shift schedules, and performance expectations aligned to operational needs.
Actively participate in recruitment by identifying staffing needs and shortlisting candidates using the company HRIS (BambooHR).
Drive performance management by providing continuous feedback, coaching, and development support.
Conduct and contribute to fair, unbiased annual performance appraisals in line with company policy.
Foster a culture of accountability, ownership, teamwork, and professional growth.
Training and Development
Assist in all aspects of Training and Development and Talent Management to maximize staff's personal and professional growth, in accordance with the company's Human Resources - Training and Development team initiatives.
Identify and conduct assessments to determine what training needs are required for staff within the department to increase job knowledge.
Identify QA and HSSE training needs across the feed mill and ensure appropriate programs are implemented.
Deliver or coordinate training on GMP or any other relevant quality system/standard as determined by the company, HSSE, incident reporting, emergency response, and compliance requirements.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Animal Nutrition, Food Science, Operations Management, or a related field.
Minimum of 5–8 years’ experience in quality assurance and/or HSSE leadership within manufacturing, preferably feed milling, agriculture, or food production.
Strong working knowledge of feed production processes and quality assurance protocols.
Familiarity with animal nutrition and feed formulation.
Proficiency in GMP, HACCP, and other regulatory standards.
Ability to operate and interpret quality control equipment and data.
Excellent leadership and communication abilities.
Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Proficient in report writing, data analysis, and performance evaluation.
Ability to lead cross-functional teams and implement process improvements.
