Head of Engineering (m/f/d) - SCAYLE Agency - onsite in Hamburg

SCAYLE is our own eCommerce infrastructure, which we developed in-house and now offer as a licensed product to other eCommerce retailers who want to scale their business with the proven infrastructure of ABOUT YOU. Our first cloud product, BACKBONE, is the first eCommerce backend on the European market to take an API-first development approach to online retail. The infrastructure is highly flexible and designed for scalability helping retailers to enter new devices and markets easily. Moreover, it is also considerably more maintenance-efficient than other systems.

• SCAYLE Agency delivers state-of-the-art eCommerce integrations for some of the most interesting eCommerce players in the industry (Harrods, Fielmann, etc.). 
• We specialize in custom middleware implementations that connect SCAYLE to complex client environments.
• We pride ourselves on a short time-to-market and high technical excellence, ensuring our clients can utilize the SCAYLE ecosystem effectively and reliably.
• As Head of Engineering - Backend, you are the technical authority for all agency implementations. You own the architecture and reliability of our PHP-based middlewares, serving as the technical counterpart to the Head of Custom Implementations to ensure delivery excellence, standardized tooling, and high-performance engineering.

What you will do: 

• Technical Authority: Define backend architecture standards, hosting strategies, and binding technical directions across all agency projects.
• Middleware Orchestration: Oversee the design and operation of mission-critical eCom flows:
• Data & Orders: Product/stock synchronization and complex order delegation logic.
• Integrations: Connecting 3rd-party ERP, CDP, CRM, and Payment/Fraud providers.
• Logistics: Custom carrier and warehouse management system (WMS) integrations.

 
• Leadership & Hiring: Own technical recruitment and mentor Lead Developers and DevOps Engineers to elevate technical decision-making and career growth.
• Efficiency & AI: Standardize CI/CD pipelines and define workflows for AI-supported development to maximize team velocity.
• Platform Feedback: Act as the strategic link to SCAYLE CORE teams, utilizing agency insights to influence the global platform roadmap.

Who you are: 

• Expert PHP (Laravel): Deep track record in designing and building complex e-commerce middleware.
• Architectural Design: Proven ability to document and implement scalable integration patterns for enterprise systems (ERP, PIM, PSP).
• AWS & Infrastructure: Expertise in core services (EC2, ECS/EKS, SQS, Kafka) and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
• Leadership: Experience managing and scaling senior technical teams.
• Excellent client communication

Nice to have: 

• German speaking
• Experience in Agency environment
• Expert Vue3/Nuxt knowledge
