Hardware Engineering Intern

Here at The Exploration Company, we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run.

Overview of the role:

We are developing a set of in-house custom emulator boards used for system testing and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) platforms. These boards emulate sensors, actuators, and motors in order to support system validation without requiring full physical hardware.

We are looking for a Hardware Engineering Intern to support the design, development, and validation of these custom electronic boards.

Responsibilities:

• Support the design and development of custom electronic boards used for sensor and motor emulation.

• Assist in schematic design, component selection, and PCB layout reviews.

• Support prototyping, bring-up, and hardware validation activities.

• Perform bench testing and debugging of prototype boards.

• Help analyze and resolve issues discovered during integration with Engineering Models and HiL test platforms.

• Contribute to documentation of hardware designs and test procedures.

• Support iterative improvements to existing emulator boards as requirements evolve.

Qualifications:

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field.

• Basic knowledge of:

• Analog and digital electronics

• Sensor interfaces

• Microcontroller-based systems

• Familiarity with schematic capture and PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, KiCad, OrCAD, etc.).

• Experience with lab equipment (oscilloscope, power supply, multimeter) is a plus.

• Interest in hardware debugging and prototyping.

Preferred Skills:

• Understanding of temperature sensors and signal conditioning.

• Basic exposure to motor control electronics or power electronics.

• Experience with rapid prototyping and board bring-up.

What You Will Learn:

• Development of custom electronics for system testing and emulation.

• Practical experience in prototype hardware development and debugging.

• Integration of hardware with HiL testing environments.

• Working in an iterative engineering development process.
