Role Summary
The Customer Master Data Steward role focuses on managing and governing master data within the Customer domain to ensure data quality, compliance, and alignment with business needs. This position requires collaboration with various stakeholders and leadership to maintain data integrity and drive data governance initiatives.
Master data governance and control: The steward independently manages Customer master data control, collaborates with other global data stewards and business data owners, sets data governance policies, attend the governance boards, reviews and approves non-standard data requests, and resolves escalated data issues. They also oversee data cleansing and remediation activities to reduce errors and support business processes.
Expertise and stakeholder engagement: The role demands deep knowledge of Customer master data, strong business partnering with owners and delegates, conflict resolution skills, and the ability to communicate complex data governance concepts to diverse audiences. The steward acts as a data advocate, facilitates communication between leadership and work groups, and ensures action items are tracked and delivered.
Accountability and performance metrics: The steward is accountable to MDM leadership and the global data owner for Customer master data, with performance tied to data governance metrics such as data quality assessments, policy audit results, business outcomes, service-level agreements, and adoption of standards by IT and business stakeholders. The role covers key Customer data areas including Customer hierarchy, direct and indirect Customers
Key Responsibilities
• Impact:
• Provide recommendations for data quality rules and data cleansing and data remediation and drive remediation with the relevant data owner.
• Work with data owner to oversee and coordinate data cleansing activities in Master Data area, to reduce rework and errors within business process.
• Accountable for implementing data policies, standards and processes within Master Data
• Responsible for reviewing and auditing changes to ensure compliance with policy.
• Innovation:
• Review, impact assess and approve/reject data requests for Customer Master Data, that are outside of standard operations, providing alternative approaches where required.
• Support refinement and improvement to master data structures to ensure global standardization.
• Provide Master data domain specific related expertise to the MDM leadership team to enable high quality decision making.
• Engage in projects that have an impact on Customer Master data
• Conduct impact/root cause analysis for incoming data governance requests and issues
• Support change to workflow and tolling to ensure tight governance of change.
• Support Analytics and AI initiatives requiring use of master data.
• Communication:
• Set and implement data governance within Customer Master Data structure, and chair the Data board for Customer Master Data with key business data owners, global process owners and other data stewards
• Work independently to drive the overall control of master data in the Customer Master data area, collaborating with other Global Data stewards, and their Business Data owner counterparts
• Propagate communication from MDM leadership team to domain/subdomain work groups, and provide open dialogue with business data owners and global process owners to refine process

Experience / Competencies
• Functional/ technical competencies
• Strong technical knowledge of relevant data domain (Customer) in S4 HANA
• Strong analytical mindset and creative problem-solving skills
• Behavioral/ leadership competencies
• Strong verbal and written communication skills: able to explain complex data management and data governance concepts to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders and audiences
• Strong project management skills
• Provide strong business partnering to the Business Data owner and delegates, drawing on the data operations team where required.
• Ability to resolve conflicts and drive collaboration both within the MD team, and with the wider stakeholders
• Strong Data manipulation/Excel/Power BI skills
• Experience auditing changes against process
Qualifications / Education
• Required:
• English speaking
• Preferred:
• Degree educated (ideally business process related)
• SAP Domain specialisation and certification
Knowledge
• 5+years of business experience, spanning BUs, geographies or functions, SAP specialism, ideally working with S4 Hana.
• Advanced experience working in Master data Operations or Master data Governance
• Specialism in specific data domain (Customer)
• Capable of working cross-functionally as well as across geographies and cultures
• Strong networking and stakeholder management skills
Career Path
• Feeder positions; Normally business data steward roles responsible for direct input of data requests, customer service or from within data operations team. Externally, experience in data management and governance is essential.
