SETTING
First Step is a renowned not-for-profit addiction, mental health, and legal services hub in the heart

of St Kilda. We provide services to thousands of vulnerable Victorians every year, with the firm

belief that everybody deserves every chance to turn their lives around. First Step provides a

uniquely multi-disciplinary team of General Practitioners, Registered Nurses, therapists, lawyers and

care coordinators all of whom have decades of experience in addiction, mental health and legal

services.

Our model of care is designed to address the systemic barriers faced by people with co-occurring

illnesses including mental ill-health and prioritises welcome, empathy and hope. Through the

compassionate application of multiple disciplines in a team environment we focus on incremental,

whole-of-life improvements that build towards physical and mental health and wellbeing. We work

to help people be connected to their families, participating in society, and taking control of their

own lives.

TEAM MEDICINE and COLLABORATION

You will find yourself in a team of GPs with decades of experience in general practice. Our GPs

specialise in the primary care of people who experience mental ill-health and substance

dependence. Your work will be integrated into a constantly collaborating team including:

Psychology
Mental health nursing
Care Coordination
Group psychoeducation and recovery programs
An accredited community legal centre

If you are not currently a prescriber of opiate substitution therapies, we will require that you

develop that aspect of your professional practice, and we can mentor you on that path.

LOW THRESHOLD, SUB-ACUTE PRIMARY CARE

We work hard to remove barriers to care by bulk-billing all patients. We offer in person and telehealth

appointments as well as drop-in clinics.

First Step is an AGPAL accredited practice and has a reputation for providing best practice

collaborative and integrated care to vulnerable Victorians.

WHAT WE OFFER

As a not-for-profit organisation we can offer salary packaging. But, uniquely to First Step your

wage can be a factor of your billing. Alternatively, you can work as an independent contractor.
