THE ROLE:
We’re looking for a senior content designer to join our team of caring, ambitious and curious content specialists. It’s an exciting time to be part of the content design team as we expand our services and how we work.
Most of your time will be spent on long-term public sector projects. Recent work includes:
• Working as part of team to redesign a service to search and apply for jobs for a government department
• Reviewing content for best practice for a financial services company
• Working with designers and developers to create a new website for a property company
• Conducting a content audit and updating content for an exam board
Beyond the support of the content design team, you’ll work alongside and learn from other user-centred design experts including user researchers, accessibility consultants, interaction designers and service designers.
As a senior content designer, you will be responsible for planning, creating, iterating delivering and maintaining content in line with user needs and organisational objectives.
Most of your time will be spent on long-term public sector projects where you’ll be embedded in multidisciplinary user-centred design teams, working with civil servants and GAIN Experience colleagues.
You’ll also have the opportunity to support on sales opportunities and help our marketing team craft content for everything from our website to our award-winning events.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Work closely with user researchers, interaction designers and other user-centred design practitioners to deliver excellent products and services
• Responsible for ensuring all content is clear, accurate, meets user needs and adheres to style guides and content patterns
• Make complex language and processes easy to understand and use data and research to inform your decisions
• Lead on content-focussed elements of projects such as writing, audits and reviews
• Support research activities, for example, observing user interviews
• Coach and mentor other practitioners in content design
• Contribute to sales opportunities, for example, writing proposals
• Plan, write and edit marketing content such as case studies, blogs and email campaigns
Requirements:
Education / qualifications
• A qualification in English, humanities or social sciences can be an advantage but is not essential
• Evidence of building your content design and user-centred design understanding beyond on-the-job learning is beneficial. For example, qualifications, courses, events, reading, mentoring and networking.
Professional skills
• Solid experience creating content using user-centred design methodologies. This could be as a content designer or in a similar role where you’ve applied this way of working
• Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills
• Varied experience creating content for different audiences, formats and channels
• Knowledge of user research methodologies and the ability to advise on which methods would be most appropriate to achieve project goals
• Knowledge of agile ways of working and skilled at working in a multidisciplinary team to create content that meets user needs
• Knowledge of working to Government Digital Service standards
• Solid experience creating content that meets accessibility regulations
• Varied experience creating inclusive content
• Understanding of how to create SEO-optimised content
• Ability to mentor or coach more junior members of the team
• Experience using different content management systems and collaborative tools (such as Figma and Miro)
• Experience using Whitehall publisher is an advantage
• Experience or an interest in using AI in content design is an advantage

• Skilled at explaining content decisions to stakeholders and advocating for content design
• Creative in approach to activities, as well as problem solving and good at identifying different options and recommending solutions
• Understands client needs and the commercial impact of requirements for GAIN Experience
• Open to giving and receiving constructive feedback on design work
