Rhino + Jetty is making housing more affordable and accessible for millions of renters each year. We’re the market-leading rental housing platform building simpler, more accessible ways for people to move into homes — and for property managers to lease with confidence.
Our technology removes friction from the move-in process, lowers upfront costs for renters, and helps property managers make faster, more accurate decisions. We support a network of 3 million rental units nationwide and work with 47 of the NMHC Top 100 property owners, including Greystar, Brookfield, Asset Living, UDR, and more.
We pioneered security deposit insurance and continue to push the industry forward with a growing suite of products — from deposit management to lease guarantees and loss-of-employment protection. We’re growing quickly, tackling real problems at scale, and building technology that’s changing how renting works.
As a member of the R+J engineering team, you’re passionate about building fintech products that provide value to our customers and to our company. You are motivated by designing engineering systems around complex business problems. You love to learn, take on challenges, and are empowered in a fast-paced and transparent culture. You're comfortable finding the right tool or pattern for the job, and advocating for improvements to the way we work.
In this role you will:
Design technical solutions that are reliable, fault-tolerant, scalable, and performant
Write code (often with AI assistance) to produce quality, readable, testable, maintainable software
Participate in code reviews and design sessions
Launch new features and services to our customers with high quality customer experiences
Work with product managers and your engineering team to size work and understand build options
Foster a culture of security and will adopt security best practices throughout Rhino+Jetty’s codebase
Our current technical stack most prominently features:
Ruby (Rails), Python (Flask), Javascript (Hotwire, React.js, Next.js)
Postgres
AWS infrastructure managed via Terraform
Datadog, Posthog, Rollbar, Sentry
IDE(s) of choice, AI tools of choice
The candidates we’re looking for generally have most of the following:
At least 5+ years of experience in building production-grade, high-volume software systems
Professional coding experience (e.g. Ruby on Rails, Python,, Javascript, React) with the willingness to recommend and adopt new technologies as necessary. Full-stack experience or willingness and ability to learn across the stack.
Experience with server-side concepts (microservices, caching, performance, monitoring and scalability)
Experience with modern databases (e.g. Postgres) and appropriate application-side data modeling
Experience with modern source control tools (git + GitHub)
Understanding of CI/CD build/deployment tools (e.g. GitHub Actions; Semaphore)
Familiarity with AWS cloud technologies (e.g. ECS, S3, RDS, etc)
Willingness to become domain subject matter experts in a highly regulated industry
Enthusiasm, curiosity, and the flexibility to thrive in a start-up atmosphere of constant change and growth
Ability and enthusiasm to use any tool to get a job done, up to and including AI tools
These aren’t required but are a big plus:
Experience working in Fintech, Insurance, Banking or other similar financial services
Prior professional experience in Ruby / Ruby on Rails
Early/mid-stage startup experience
Compensation & Benefits
Base Salary Range: $140,000 - $170,000
Rhino + Jetty has partnered with a number of compensation benchmarking tools to determine competitive and fair market pay bands for our size and stage. Our goal is to ensure each employee is paid equitably and competitively while also maintaining a consistent and standardized methodology.
Individual pay decisions are based on a number of factors including qualifications for the role, experience level and balancing internal equity relative to other teammates.
