Summary:
Prairie Island Indian Community (PIIC) is seeking one seasonal intern to support our food sovereignty work. The internship will start January 5th and last through June 30th. This opportunity will help our food sovereignty team with work in the gardens and greenhouse, with food and medicine preservation, and with community events.
Job Responsibilities & Duties:
The following duties and responsibilities are not meant to be all-inclusive and may be adjusted to meet business needs.
Assist with maintenance of the Community Vegetable Garden, Cultural & Medicinal Garden, and Tiyokȟata (greenhouse) operations
Support food and medicine processing and preservation efforts
Support education and outreach events throughout the fall/winter
Assist with other projects/tasks as needed
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be 16 years old or older
Ability and enthusiasm for working outdoors in many different weather conditions (heat, rain, wind, cold)
Interest in learning how to operate basic garden tools such as hand tools, mowers, and weed whips
Successful experience working in a team setting
Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with Dakota culture and language
Experience with gardening and food preservation
