The Town of Hanover is seeking a skilled and motivated Fleet Mechanic to help maintain the vehicles and equipment that support essential town services. This position is responsible for diagnosing and correcting mechanical problems on a wide variety of Town vehicles and equipment while performing preventive maintenance procedures. The Fleet Mechanic also supports parts inventory management and may assist with maintaining the stockroom of vehicle and equipment parts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain and repair a wide range of Town vehicles and heavy equipment including backhoes, tractors, dump trucks, bulldozers, motor graders, street sweepers, police cruisers, fire engines, cars, trucks, and mowing equipment
Perform repairs on emergency vehicles including engines, electrical systems, brakes, lights, sirens, radios, water pumps, and climate control systems
Conduct preventive maintenance such as tune-ups, oil and filter changes, brake repairs, drivetrain inspections, and heating/air conditioning repairs
Diagnose mechanical problems using both manual and computerized testing equipment
Perform corrective maintenance on engine, hydraulic, electrical, fuel, brake, steering, and air systems
Weld and fabricate parts and modify equipment as needed
Perform auto body repairs and painting when required
Respond to service calls and perform field repairs during and after normal work hours
Assist with snow removal operations when necessary
Perform small engine repairs and maintenance
Conduct statutory inspections required by the State of New Hampshire
Maintain detailed maintenance records including work performed and parts inventory
Maintain a clean and organized work area and tool inventory
Additional Duties (as assigned)
Monitor and maintain inventory of parts and supplies for Town vehicles and equipment
Research parts availability and pricing; coordinate with vendors
Maintain material safety data sheets (MSDS)
Shuttle vehicles for servicing or repairs as required
Conduct inspections of the underground fuel storage tank facility
Maintain inventory and reporting records
Perform related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation and repair
Knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, brake, steering, fuel, and air systems
Knowledge of heating and air conditioning systems in vehicles
Knowledge of inventory management principles
Skill in diagnosing mechanical problems across a wide variety of vehicles and equipment
Skill in performing preventive and corrective maintenance procedures
Skill in using diagnostic tools, gauges, meters, and hand and power tools
Skill in welding and fabrication
Knowledge of computer systems and job-related software
Strong oral and written communication skills
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Work involves intermittent sitting, standing, bending, crouching, and stooping
Frequent lifting of light and heavy objects and use of tools requiring dexterity
Ability to distinguish between shades of color and detect mechanical issues through sound or smell
Work performed in a garage, office, and outdoor environments, occasionally in cold or inclement weather
Exposure to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts
Use of protective equipment such as gloves, masks, and goggles required
Minimum Qualifications
Specialized training related to vehicle or equipment repair in addition to basic education typically associated with completion of high school
One to two years of relevant experience or completion of an apprenticeship or internship in vehicle or equipment maintenance
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid New Hampshire driver’s license appropriate for the equipment operated
Hours of Work:
40 hours a week: 7:00am- 3:30pm Mon-Fri
Union, Non-Exempt Position
Winter Storm cleanup hours may vary to include evenings and weekends.
