We are seeking a Flatbed Orientation Instructor / Inspector to join our Safety team. This role plays a critical part in preparing new and existing contractors to safely haul open deck freight and ensuring that equipment meets all state and federal safety standards. The position combines hands-on training, safety inspections, and regulatory compliance, helping maintain Mercer’s commitment to safe and efficient operations.
This role is ideal for someone with flatbed experience, a strong understanding of cargo securement, and the ability to teach and communicate safety standards clearly.
This position is onsite Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

What’ You'll Do
Assist with and conduct flatbed orientation training for new and existing contractors, focusing on proper cargo securement and tarping techniques.
Teach and reinforce safe loading, binding, and securement practices in accordance with federal safety regulations.
Perform inspections of trucks and trailers to ensure compliance with state and federal safety standards.
Identify and document mechanical issues, safety concerns, or regulatory violations.
Maintain inspection records and complete required documentation and data entry.
Stay current on Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations and industry safety standards to support safe operations.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid driver’s license or CDL preferred
Knowledge of commercial vehicle safety standards and inspection procedures
Strong communication skills and ability to train others
Ability to work independently and maintain accurate documentation
Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office
Flatbed or open deck cargo securement experience preferred
Mechanical or truck inspection background preferred
Physical Requirements
This position requires regular physical activity and work in a transportation yard environment, including:
Lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally
Bending, climbing, and working around commercial vehicles
Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
Inspecting equipment under and around trucks and trailers
Exposure to vehicle emissions, oil, grease, and other transportation-related materials
Screening Requirements
May include motor vehicle check, drug screen, and criminal background check.
