Firefighter Paramedic

Position Title:  Firefighter Paramedic             FLSA Status: Non-Exempt          

Department:  Fire                                              Paramedic Range: $66,384 - $94,637 LATERALS DOE

Reports to:  Fire Captain

Position Summary

 This position is responsible for performing a variety of working level technical tasks in fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services, prevention, and other special assignments.

 

 

Supervision Received

 Works under the direct supervision of the Shift Captain or designated Shift Officer. May report to Chief Officers.

 

 

Supervision Exercised

 Provide general guidance to employees in training, students, or on a project basis.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 Promotes and follows the departments mission and vision statements, values and expectations.

Respond to alarms and perform firefighting activities including driving apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, fire combat, containment, salvage, and extinguishment tasks.

Perform forcible entry into involved buildings and vehicles.

Perform emergency aid activities including administering first aid and providing other assistance as required.

Participate in fire drills, attend classes in firefighting, emergency medicine, hazardous materials, and related subjects.

Clean and inspect equipment and apparatus after returning from incident and notify supervisors of any discrepant conditions.

Make minor repairs to equipment and apparatus, perform routine preventative maintenance tasks, and keep records of such action.

Operate radio and other communication equipment.

Participate in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs.

Keep fire station, equipment, and grounds in a clean, operational, and orderly condition.

Acquire and retain a thorough knowledge of the city, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items.

Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with Department/City policies and procedures.

Present programs to the community on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics.

Maintain a productive working environment which includes, but is not limited to, a spirit of cooperation with co-workers, peers and the public.

Maintain and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment for various situations encountered, including use of Personal Accountability Record (PAR) systems.

Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows city-wide safety policy and practices. Adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the department/city policies and procedures.

Maintain physical fitness level that ensures ability to ensure personal safety.

Subject to emergency callbacks and/or mandatory return to duty.

Other duties as assigned by the Fire Captain and/or Chief Officer.

 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

Knowledge of:

EMS and resuscitation techniques and their application.

Technical and administrative principles and practices, methods and techniques of fire suppression and prevention programs and emergency medical services.

Operation, maintenance, and uses of modern firefighting equipment.

 Skilled In:

Operation of the applicable tools and equipment.

Working under stress and using good judgment in emergency situations.

Ability To:

Present various options and approaches to problem identification and resolution.

Acquire and maintain a professional uniform, in compliance with department requirements.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Analyze situations and adopt a reasonable course of action.

Attend required training events and maintain required training participation levels.

Work irregular shift hours and participate in staffing pages (“Callbacks”) as required.

Maintain physical fitness per department standards.

 

 Minimum Qualifications

 

Education and Experience

Graduation from High School or GED

Certifications Required (Must Keep Current)

Utah State Paramedic Certified

Certification for CPR, ACLS PALS/PEPP

UFRA Firefighter I & II Certified

UFRA Hazmat Operations Certified

Valid State of Utah Driver’s License Class “D”

NIMS 100, 200, 700, & 800 (first 6 months)

Recommended or currently working toward. Pending class/training availability

UFRA Apparatus Driver’s Operator-Pumper (ADO-P) certified

UFRA Apparatus Driver’s Operator-Aerial (ADO-A) certified

 

 

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, hear, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and smell.  Employee will also occasionally be required to perform a variety of physically demanding maneuvers and activities while involved in fire fighting and rescue operations, including running, walking, stooping, bending, rolling, crawling, climbing, jumping, lifting, carrying, dragging, and safely operating assigned equipment and vehicles. Employee must successfully pass medical exam after job offer and periodically through employment.

The employee must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 200 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. 

 

                                                                     

Work Environment

The noise level is usually quiet in office settings and loud at emergency scenes.  Work is performed primarily in office, vehicles and outdoor settings.  Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations.  Individual is exposed to hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance including, but not limited to, smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents and oils.

 

Work can be under a variety of unfavorable conditions including harsh weather, poor or no lighting, extremes in temperatures, all types of weather conditions, electrical hazards and exposure to communicable diseases and blood-borne pathogens in body fluids.
