About the Role
The Financial Accountant is responsible for ensuring accurate, timely and compliant financial reporting across New Zealand and Australia operations.
This is a hands-on role that oversees month-end processes, statutory compliance, cash flow management and internal controls, while partnering with the wider business to provide meaningful financial insights.
The role also supports continuous improvement across systems and reporting, ensuring strong governance and financial integrity as the business continues to grow.
Position Title: Financial Accountant
Reports To: Finance Manager
Direct Reports: Accounts Assistant
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Month-End
Prepare accurate and timely month-end and year-end accounts
Complete balance sheet reconciliations and maintain the integrity of financial data
Provide clear variance analysis and commentary on business performance
Manage prepayments, accruals, fixed assets and capital expenditure tracking
Support budgeting and forecasting processes
Oversee completion of the month-end programme and ensure team deadlines are met
Cash Flow & Working Capital
Assist in managing short-term cash flow across NZ and Australia
Maintain rolling cash flow forecasts
Oversee invoicing, debtor management and supplier payment schedules
Ensure all cash flow records are accurate and current
Tax & Statutory Compliance (NZ & Australia)
Prepare and lodge GST, BAS, PAYE, PAYG, FBT, RWT and other statutory returns accurately and on time
Provide information to external accountants for IFRS and statutory reporting
Monitor bank covenant compliance and identify areas of financial risk
Keep up to date with legislative changes and implement required updates
Foreign Currency & Systems
Maintain foreign exchange records and monitor FX exposure
Ensure foreign currency payments follow agreed rates
Maintain finance systems (Navision experience advantageous)
Improve reporting frameworks and identify process efficiencies
Internal Controls & Projects
Strengthen internal controls and monitor delegated authority compliance
Support strong governance through transparent reporting
Identify and lead process improvement initiatives and finance-related projects
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
2–3+ years’ experience in a Financial Accountant or similar role
Tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance or related discipline
Strong intermediate accounting knowledge and solid tax understanding
Experience in cash flow management, budgeting and forecasting
High proficiency in Excel and experience with ERP/POS systems
Strong analytical skills and high attention to detail
Commercially minded with the ability to translate numbers into insights
Confident communicator who can work independently and collaboratively
Proactive, adaptable and solutions-focused
