The Filling & Packing Service Engineer – Automation is responsible for providing expert automation and controls support during service interventions, maintenance activities, troubleshooting, and startup/commissioning of filling and packaging equipment.
This role ensures reliable machine performance, supports customers on-site and remotely, and collaborates with mechanical and process teams to guarantee successful service execution according to GEA’s quality and safety standards.
The position requires strong knowledge of industrial automation systems (PLC, HMI, servo drives, sensors, industrial networks), hands on problem-solving skills, and the ability to work in dynamic production environments across different customer sites.
Responsibilities / Tasks
Automation Support During Services
• Execute automation-related tasks during preventive and corrective maintenance of filling and packaging machines.
• Diagnose and resolve issues related to PLC logic, HMI interfaces, sensors, actuators, servo/drive systems, and communication networks.
• Perform software adjustments, parameter tuning, and functionality testing.
Startup & Commissioning Activities
• Support automation commissioning of filling equipment after overhauls, rebuilds, upgrades, or major service interventions.
• Validate machine sequences, interlocks, safety circuits, and system integration with upstream/downstream equipment.
• Ensure machines reach rated performance, efficiency, and quality KPIs.
Troubleshooting & Technical Support
• Provide on-site and remote troubleshooting to minimize downtime and ensure production continuity.
• Conduct root‑cause analysis and implement corrective actions to prevent recurring automation failures.
Documentation & Reporting
• Prepare service reports, findings, and recommended actions after each intervention.
• Update and maintain machine configurations, software backups, and technical documentation.
• Communicate technical information clearly to customers and internal stakeholders.
Customer Interaction & Technical Guidance
• Provide technical guidance to operators and maintenance personnel regarding automation systems.
• Train customer staff on proper use, troubleshooting, and basic diagnostics of filling automation.
• Represent the company professionally on-site, ensuring customer satisfaction.
Compliance, Safety & Quality
• Follow corporate safety procedures, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), and risk assessments during all interventions.
• Ensure all automation modifications comply with internal standards and customer requirements.
• Promote continuous improvement and operational excellence during field activities.
Collaboration & Coordination
• Work alongside mechanical, electrical, and process engineers to ensure aligned service execution.
• Coordinate with project teams for upgrades, retrofits, and complex service events.
• Escalate critical issues to central engineering when required.
Your Profile / Qualifications
• Degree in engineering career (Industrial, Electrical, Automation, Mechatronics).
• English proficiency (B2).
• 3+ years of experience working as an automation engineer in Filling & Packaging.
• Electricity, automation, control, and pneumatics.
