TITLE: Field Trip Facilitator (Part-Time)
DEPARTMENT: Education and Community Outreach
REPORTS TO: Science Education Program Manager
GENERAL SUMMARY: The Field Trip Facilitator will assist the Science Education Program Manager in leading youth field trips which typically take place Tuesday – Friday mornings in the Conservatory. This position is seasonal (March – May) and two to four days per week depending on applicant availability and field trip scheduling.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Help with material preparation and classroom arrangement prior to student arrival.
Help students unload and get safely into the Conservatory.
Ensure lunches, bags, and other personal items get to the classroom.
Help groups navigate the Conservatory during self-guided portions of their visit.
Support classroom learning by assisting with hands-on activities and keeping students positively engaged with the material.
Assist with field trip clean-up.
Learn key lesson plans to be able to teach classroom sessions in the event that the Science Education Program Manager is unavailable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Ability to implement all principal duties and responsibilities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with children across a broad age range as well as the general public. Must be knowledgeable, enthusiastic and responsible enough to generate interest and enthusiasm from the public.
Ability to effectively lead large groups of students on tours and in a classroom setting
Ability to work with co-workers in a pleasant and courteous manner.
Computer skills — proficiency with Internet and email software, as well as Microsoft Office and Windows.
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
Strong attention to details.
Ability to prioritize and work independently.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SENSORY DIMENSIONS
Physical mobility: sitting, standing, walking, lifting/carrying objects up to 30 pounds, manual dexterity to operate keyboard.
Mental effort: reading, writing, analyzing and visualizing.
Sensory requirement: ability to communicate and respond to staff in a friendly and fair manner.
Strong work ethic in all areas of job performance.
Ability to communicate and respond both in person and over the phone to the general public, staff and volunteers in a friendly manner.
Able to work under deadlines and stress.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Ability to provide own transportation to perform principal responsibilities.
Will have occasion to work in or pass through any area of the Conservatory or growing houses.
MINIMUM POSITION GUIDELINES (Education, Experience and Certification)
Bachelor’s degree preferred in botany, horticulture, plant biology, education or any educational science.
Minimum of two (2) years’ work experience or an equivalent combination of related schooling and work experience.
