Location: All sites serviced by The North Bay Indigenous Hub
The North Bay Indigenous Hub (NBIH) will provide a wide range of programming services including traditional healing, primary care, health promotion, chronic disease management, family-focused maternal/child health care, mental wellness care, diabetes care, and a culturally integrated licensed day care facility. All the programs are to be delivered in a culturally safe manner to the local urban Indigenous population in addition to our partner First Nations, Nipissing, Temagami and Dokis First Nations. This new Indigenous Primary Health Care team seeks a motivated, self-starter who is passionate about positive health outcomes for Indigenous people.
Under the direction of the of the Director of Indigenous Primary Care of the North Bay Indigenous Hub (NBIH), this position will be responsible to assist in the delivery of culturally competent and safe counselling and support that promotes healthy family functioning in relation to personal, family and community values while providing linkage to relevant community resources with a focus on prevention, family preservation and strengthening cultural identity. The Family Services Counsellor will be part of an inter-professional team at the North Bay Indigenous Hub (NBIH).
Qualifications:
Diploma is Social Service Worker or Indigenous Wellness and Addiction
Minimum 2 years experience in a related field
Knowledge of Indigenous culture, values, traditions and the impacts of colonization on individuals and families
Experience working within culturally appropriate service models for Indigenous people
Fluency in a traditional language is an asset
High level of sound and independent judgement, reasoning and discretion
Professional, responsive and positive work attitude is essential
Ability to work within interdisciplinary teams
Demonstrated community work experience with families to improve wellness, coping skills, and empowerment in the following areas: poverty issues, housing, legal, social assistance, education, family violence
Valid Class G Driver’s License, access to a reliable vehicle and insurance
Ability and willingness to travel and to work flexible hours
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
In depth knowledge of Indigenous Social Determinants of Health
Cultural understanding of traditional parenting, family roles with a connection to culture and ways of being
Role modeling wise practices in Indigenous wellness
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing case notes with strong family advocacy
Ability to build rapport and trust with community members
Responsibilities:
Work with, educate and coach individuals, families and group by counselling using trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches
Liaison for children and families that require support with case management or coordination of service provision
Integrated traditional practices and cultural knowledge into healing plans
Build trust with families and develop a dependable and reliable relationship
Assess client needs, develop care plans, and advocate for families in navigating systems
Connect families with community resources
Maintain accurate client records, reports and data in compliance with agency policies.
A current Criminal/Police Records Check and Vulnerable Persons check is a requirement for this position.
