Hamilton City Council (Council) is seeking an experienced and highly capable professional to serve as the external member of Council’s Finance and Assurance Committee. This is a pivotal governance role where you will contribute independent insight and expertise to support the Council’s stewardship of public resources.
About the Finance and Assurance Committee
The Committee oversees, reviews, and reports to Council on the effectiveness of strategies, policies, systems, processes, and performance in the areas of:
• Financial management
• Risk management
• Internal and external audit
• Legislative and regulatory compliance
The Committee is expected to meet five times per year.
To be considered for this appointment, you will bring governance-level expertise and experience that enables you to act as an effective, independent voice on the Committee. You will complement the skills and knowledge of existing members and demonstrate capability across the following areas:
Senior experience in audit and risk governance, including service on audit, risk, or equivalent committees
• Strong financial background; membership with Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand (or an internationally recognised equivalent) is advantageous
• Experience working within, or closely with, the local government or public sector, with an understanding of accountability, regulatory, and funding environments
• Ability to exercise independent, objective judgement, including constructive challenge and professional scepticism
• Sound understanding of frameworks for financial management, risk management, audit, and internal controls
• Experience reviewing and assessing organisational insurance arrangements
• Understanding of internal and external audit processes, including engagement with auditors and oversight of audit findings
• Ability to contribute insights that support organisational performance, efficiency, and positive community outcomes
• Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and experience supporting governance frameworks that strengthen relationships with mana whenuaCapacity and commitment to devote the time and effort required of an external member
