Job Description
The Estimator, Fire Protection is responsible for independently leading the preparation of detailed and accurate cost estimates for complex fire protection systems, including sprinkler and specialty suppression systems. This role requires a strong understanding of fire protection design, codes, and installation practices, along with the ability to identify risks, interpret technical documents, and develop competitive, comprehensive proposals.
As a senior member of the estimating team, this role also contributes to process improvement, supports team development, and partners closely with operations to ensure successful project execution.
What You Will Do
Lead the development of detailed cost estimates for fire protection systems, including wet, dry, pre-action, and specialty suppression systems
Review and interpret drawings, specifications, and contract documents with a strong understanding of fire protection scope and code requirements (e.g., NFPA standards)
Identify scope gaps, design inconsistencies, and potential risks; proactively drive clarification and resolution
Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for piping, fittings, heads, valves, and equipment
Solicit, level, and evaluate subcontractor and vendor proposals to ensure full scope coverage and competitive pricing
Collaborate with engineers, designers, project managers, and field teams to validate constructability and approach
Develop clear, well-structured proposals including scope narratives, assumptions, and qualifications
Participate in bid reviews, client presentations, and scope discussions, confidently articulating estimate details
Support value engineering efforts and provide cost-saving alternatives where appropriate
Ensure seamless handoff of project knowledge to operations teams upon award
Mentor and support junior estimators, sharing knowledge and best practices
Maintain strong, professional relationships with clients, vendors, and internal stakeholders
What We’re Looking for
5–8+ years of estimating experience, with a strong focus on fire protection systems
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience
Strong knowledge of fire protection systems, installation methods, and applicable codes (NFPA)
Experience in the Boston construction market preferred
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Experience with Bluebeam Review
Familiarity with estimating and takeoff software
Experience with CRM tools (Sugar CRM preferred)
Advanced knowledge of fire protection systems, materials, and installation practices
Strong analytical and mathematical skills with exceptional attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong presentation and client-facing capabilities
Proven problem-solving skills and sound judgment
Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment
Strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and coordination across trades
