Job Description
The Mechanical Controls Design Engineer
will develop innovative designs to challenging engineering problems for a wide variety of applications including but not limited to facility control systems, facility data systems, and unique electro-mechanical systems.
The Engineer will develop detailed design criteria from customer requirements and use strong engineering principles and tools to develop robust and reliable solutions. They will support the development of mechanical subsystems by selecting instruments and devices within accuracy and uncertainty requirements in order for the subsystem to perform its function and allow for proper performance and system health monitoring. Tasks may include electrical motor operated assembly design, hydraulic actuation system design, uncertainty assessment, and device selection and layouts in piping systems.
The Controls Design Engineer will regularly coordinate with engineers from other disciplines and backgrounds to ensure proper design integration. Additionally, the Engineer in this role will work closely with designers and operators to ensure designed hardware is manufacturable and maintainable.
Support tasks/projects as an individual contributor or as assigned by the Group Lead
Develop design documentation such as presentations, white papers, calculation packages, reports, etc.
Perform review of design documentation from other ATS and third-party engineers
Present designs and design progress for customer review and feedback
Perform various analysis tasks such as uncertainty analysis, heat loads, and response times using appropriate software tools or hand calcs
Requirements:
B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
A minimum of 5 years of applicable experience, preferably in instrumentation, data acquisition, and control system development and/or operations
Secret DoD Clearance or the ability to obtain a Secret DoD Clearance
Desired Qualifications:
Experience within the aerospace industry working at test facilities
Experience in electrical schematic and interconnect panel layout design using CAD (preferably AutoCAD)
Familiarity with industrial sensors and actuators: pressure, temperature, LVDT, accelerometers, motor controllers, flow meters, relays, strain gauges, valves, and pumps
Ability to specify instrumentation wiring needed for various interfacing of data systems and sensors
Experience crafting and installing instrumentation and control systems in hazardous areas (NFPA 70 Section 500 installations); Class 1, Division 1, and Division 2 environments
Proficiency with electrical diagnostic equipment
Understanding of network configuration and other IT fundamentals
Familiarity with calibration principles (uncertainty calculation, total error ratios, etc.) and industry calibration standards (ISO/IEC 17025, ANSI NCSL Z540.3).
Proficient in noise reduction, shielding, grounding techniques, termination, and analog and digital filtering to provide high-fidelity measurements
Understanding of computers and programming languages (LabVIEW, Java, HTML, and/or C++, Python)
