AECOM is seeking a Entry-Level Aquatic Biologist to join our Environment team in Burnaby, BC. This new position is an excellent opportunity for an early-career biologist who is enthusiastic about fieldwork and eager to grow their technical skills in a consulting environment.
We are looking for candidates that are positive and team-oriented with a willingness to learn and take initiative. You will work alongside experienced biologists and environmental professionals on a wide variety of industrial, infrastructure, and government projects throughout British Columbia and Western Canada.
Key Responsibilities
• Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Conducting background research on aquatic and terrestrial ecological resources
• Participating in aquatic field programs (freshwater and/or marine), including biological sampling and ecological surveys such as:• Fish and fish habitat assessments
• Intertidal surveys
• Fish and amphibian salvages
• Supporting terrestrial field programs, including vegetation surveys, wildlife habitat assessments, and nesting bird sweeps
• Assisting with the preparation of environmental permits and approvals (federal, provincial, and municipal)
• Supporting and participating in construction environmental monitoring and mitigation
• Assisting with data compilation, analysis, and interpretation
• Contributing to technical report writing and environmental assessments
• Working collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams of biologists, planners, engineers, and other specialists
• Preparing or contributing to health and safety plans and demonstrating personal safety leadership
• Participating in out-of-town travel for fieldwork, including work in remote locations and flexible schedules
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related discipline
• Strong technical background, preferably in aquatic biology
• Eligible for, or registered as, a Biology-in-Training (B.I.T.) or equivalent with the BC College of Applied Biology
• Valid driver’s license
• Willingness to conduct fieldwork in varying conditions and remote locations
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word
Preferred Qualifications and Assets
• Master’s degree in a related discipline
• 1–2+ years of relevant environmental or consulting experience (experience in BC or Western Canada considered an asset)
• Field experience with aquatic sampling methods and familiarity with BC Resources Information Standards Committee protocols
• Working knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Fisheries Act, Species at Risk Act, and Water Sustainability Act
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent organizational and time-management abilities
• Experience with ArcGIS, mapping, or statistical software an asset
• Technical certifications such as electrofishing, CABIN, First Aid, or ATV/UTV training considered assets
• This position will involve flexible hours and extended field days during field seasons.
• Relocation is not available for this position.
