He angituutanga: The opportunity
Are you Hamilton City Council’s next Enterprise Architect?
This is a newly created role and it’s an exciting time to join HCC as we strengthen enterprise-wide architectural decision-making and long-term sustainability across our digital environment.
Our purpose is to improve the wellbeing of Hamiltonians. To fulfil our purpose, we’re working to become the leading community‑focused Council unlocking Hamilton’s full potential and making it the best place to live.
As our Enterprise Architect, you’ll provide enterprise-wide architecture leadership to ensure Council’s technology, data, and integration landscape is coherent, secure, and fit for purpose supporting reliable, sustainable digital services.
Key responsibilities:
Enterprise architecture leadership
• Provide enterprise‑wide architecture leadership to ensure Council’s technology, data, and integration landscape is coherent, secure, and fit for purpose.
• Maintain a current view of the technology landscape, key dependencies, and areas of material risk or technical debt.
Architecture standards and patterns
• Define and maintain practical architecture standards, principles, and reference patterns across applications, integration, data, and cloud.
• Ensure standards are clear, usable, and proportionate enabling delivery teams to move faster with less rework.
Solution assurance and design guidance
• Provide architecture assurance for significant initiatives and changes, identifying design risks early and improving solution quality and maintainability.
• Guide solution design decisions in collaboration with delivery teams, platform leads, and vendors.
Integration and interoperability
• Establish integration and API design patterns that reduce duplication and improve reliability and supportability.
• Promote reuse and consistent approaches to integration design and documentation.
Technology roadmaps and lifecycle stewardship
• Support the development of technology roadmaps and lifecycle planning to reduce obsolescence risk and improve investment sequencing.
• Provide advice on technical debt and lifecycle constraints, including options and trade‑offs.
Stakeholder engagement and influence
• Act as a trusted advisor to Digital Services leadership and key stakeholders on technology direction, options, and implications.
• Communicate architecture decisions clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
How you’ll work (the “how”, not just the “what”)
You’ll enable delivery through early guidance and clear patterns (not late-stage gatekeeping), apply pragmatic judgement to balance delivery pace with sustainability and risk, and communicate clearly in plain language to build trust across teams.
You’ll also promote simplicity, reuse, and documentation to reduce key-person dependency, and apply proportional governance based on risk and complexity.
We’re looking for someone who thinks in terms of organisational outcomes (not just technology solutions), demonstrates sound judgement in complex environments, and can influence across teams without line management responsibility.
You’ll be able to explain complex technical concepts in clear, plain language and bring a service-oriented mindset that helps teams succeed rather than creating barriers.
Oo puumanawa me oo wheako | Your skills and experience

• At least 15 years’ post‑qualification experience in a complex environment, including substantial enterprise architecture and large‑scale systems/business transformation experience.
• Demonstrated experience defining and applying architecture standards, principles, and patterns across applications, integration, data, and platforms.
• Strong understanding of integration approaches, data architecture, and cloud-based platforms supporting reliable, scalable digital services.
• Experience providing architecture guidance and assurance for major initiatives alongside delivery teams, vendors, and business stakeholders.
• Proven ability to balance delivery pace with long‑term sustainability, security, and risk management.
