Engineering Team Lead

The role / impact

As a Team Lead within our DevX shared platforms, you will be a vital link between sound technical direction and the essential responsibilities of people leadership. You will lead an engineering pod dedicated to the Xero Gateway, a critical point of ingress for all inbound API traffic, ensuring your team is empowered to deliver high-quality, scalable infrastructure that directly accelerates our speed to market.

You will be accountable for the operational health and engineering standards within your pod, balancing a sustainable pace of delivery with the personal growth of your engineers. By fostering a world-class engineering culture, you will influence both the people and the platform, driving the next phase of our API-first strategy to support Xero’s global partner ecosystem

The team / how they connect

You will join the Catalyst Engineering portfolio, a dedicated platform and developer enablement function that serves as the engine for Xero’s global engineering teams. Your specific pod focuses on all-purpose ingress and API gateways, working collaboratively to create a seamless and consistent API ecosystem across the business.

The team is currently working on / Initially, you will focus on

• Leading a high-performing pod through the architecture and implementation of distributed systems for the Xero Gateway.

• Modernising our stack using a range of tools including C#, Python, Go, and container orchestration with Kubernetes.

• Managing production environments and cloud infrastructure via AWS and Infrastructure as Code using Terraform.

• Refactoring complex systems to improve API lifecycle management and overall operational resilience.

• Supporting a multi-region ingress gateway strategy

Here are some of the things we are looking for

• You bring a proven track record of leading software delivery teams using Lean-Agile techniques to balance business needs with individual growth.

• Your background includes deep technical experience with cloud networking, specifically within AWS and Kubernetes environments.

• You possess a high EQ and an empathetic coaching style that helps you mentor engineers and foster a culture of psychological safety.

• A strong understanding of API gateways and the software development lifecycle is something you will use to guide technical design decisions.

• You have experience building and managing production environments using Terraform or similar Infrastructure as Code tools.

• Your communication style allows you to translate complex technical challenges into clear roadmaps in collaboration with product peers.
