Engineering Manager - Tracking Experience

As the Engineering Manager for our Mobile Tracking Experience squad, you’ll lead the team at the core of the Yazio journey: the daily diary where millions of users log their food and habits. Together with your Product Manager, you’ll form a true leadership duo that co-owns the squad’s strategy, roadmap, and long-term system health.

You’ll be accountable for two things above all:

A healthy, motivated engineering team that grows and performs over time.

A squad that reliably ships impactful product work without burning out people or the platform.

This role is 100% remote and open to candidates based in Germany, Spain, Portugal, or the U.K.

YOUR MISSION

Your mission is to build the team and the technical foundation that makes nutrition tracking feel effortless, reliable, and fast – every single day. You won’t just “run delivery”; you’ll use technical strategy, data, and strong partnership with your PM to shape what the squad works on and how.

In practice, you will:

Co-own vision, strategy, and outcomes with your Product Manager
Challenge the “why”, shape the “how”, and align on a single plan for the squad. You use metrics (e.g., daily tracking rate, funnel drop-offs, experiment results) to drive decisions, not just ticket lists.

Build and grow a resilient engineering team
Create a culture of psychological safety with a high bar for ownership and collaboration. You run effective 1:1s, give direct feedback, and create clear growth paths for your engineers.

Balance speed with sustainable architecture (KMP-first)
Own feasibility and sustainability risk for the squad. You make explicit trade-offs between rapid experiments and long-term health of our Kotlin Multiplatform codebase, treating tech debt as a portfolio tied to velocity, stability, and quality.

Create predictable, focused execution
Set up lean rituals, clarify ownership, and remove blockers so the team can deliver at a steady, sustainable pace – especially in high-pressure periods like New Year.

Champion an AI- and automation-first mindset
Encourage the squad to use AI and tooling to speed up development, improve testing and quality, and make better decisions, while staying grounded in user and business impact.

Influence beyond your squad
Work closely with other squads and the Mobile Platform team to manage dependencies, align on shared initiatives, and improve how we build mobile at Yazio overall.

YOUR PROFILE

We’re looking for an experienced Engineering Manager who acts as a technical strategist for a mobile product squad – not a delivery coordinator. You turn ambiguity into clear, executable plans and care equally about product impact, technical health, and team well-being.

Must-haves

Proven experience as an Engineering Manager in a product-led environment, leading cross-functional teams (PM, design, engineering) that regularly ship user-facing features.

Strong mobile background in Android or iOS (ideally Android), with enough technical depth to discuss architecture, trade-offs, and Kotlin Multiplatform with senior engineers.

Product & business mindset: comfortable with metrics, experiments, and funnels; you can explain technical options in terms of retention, conversion, and velocity, not just complexity.

Calm under pressure and high ambiguity: you’ve handled shifting priorities, tech-debt pressure, and tight timelines while keeping expectations realistic and protecting the team from burnout.

People leadership & coaching: you’ve grown mid/senior engineers, given clear and sometimes tough feedback, and built an environment of high trust with a high bar for ownership.

Organizational influence beyond your squad: you proactively manage dependencies, build alignment with other teams and stakeholders, and know when to escalate or say “no” to protect sustainability.

Excellent communication in English, written and verbal, and the ability to present a clear, unified story together with your Product Manager to stakeholders and leadership.

Nice-to-haves

Experience with Kotlin Multiplatform or similar shared-mobile architectures.

Background in consumer subscription products or health / wellness apps.

Experience working with both Android and iOS platforms and their teams.

Hands-on use of AI tools in engineering workflows (e.g. coding, testing, analysis).
