Engineering Manager / Tech Lead

About the Role

As Engineering Manager / Tech Lead for the Sandbox team at Together AI, you will lead and grow the team responsible for building the isolated, secure compute environments that power AI code execution across Together's platform. Together Sandbox provides the sandboxed execution layer that enables reinforcement learning workflows, LLM code interpreters, AI agents, and developer tooling to run safely and at scale.

This is a hybrid leadership role — equal parts technical leadership and people management. You will own the technical direction of the team while also building a high-performing engineering culture. You'll work closely with the team's Product Manager to develop and execute the roadmap, drive day-to-day project management, and collaborate with engineering leads across Together to ensure seamless integration with the broader platform.

You will inherit a team of 4 engineers (3 backend, 1 full-stack) and be responsible for hiring and onboarding 4 additional engineers to scale the team's capacity and capabilities.

About the Team

The Together Sandbox team builds and operates Together AI's sandbox infrastructure: isolated, ephemeral compute environments where AI-generated code can run safely. The product serves both external customers via the Together Sandbox SDK and internal Together use cases, including code interpretation and reinforcement learning.

What the team builds:

• Sandbox infrastructure: Container orchestration, gVisor-based isolation, lifecycle management (create, pause, resume, terminate)

• SDKs: TypeScript and Python SDKs that give developers programmatic access to sandboxes

• Platform integration: Authentication, billing, usage dashboards, and admin tooling within Together's platform

• Developer experience: Documentation, templates, observability, and debugging tools

Key technical areas: gVisor, container orchestration, Kubernetes, Elixir backend services, TypeScript/Python SDKs, cloud infrastructure (AWS), API design, and systems reliability.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, with 2+ years in a technical leadership or engineering management role

• Strong systems engineering background — experience with containerization, orchestration (Kubernetes), and cloud infrastructure

• Hands-on experience building and operating production-grade backend services and APIs

• Proficiency in at least one of: TypeScript, Python, Elixir, Go, or Rust

• Demonstrated ability to lead and grow high-performing engineering teams (4–10 people)

• Strong project management skills — comfortable driving execution through tools like Linear, Jira, or similar

• Excellent communication skills — able to translate between technical depth and business context

Preferred

• Experience with container isolation technologies (gVisor, Firecracker, Kata Containers) or secure execution environments

• Experience building developer-facing products: SDKs, APIs, developer tooling, or infrastructure platforms

• Familiarity with AI/ML workflows — code execution, agentic systems, or reinforcement learning environments

• Experience in a high-growth startup environment where you've had to balance building new features with maintaining reliability

• Track record of hiring and onboarding engineers successfull
