About the Role

The DevOps team is responsible for the reliability, scalability, efficiency, security, and observability of our services and infrastructure supporting our engineers in removing friction from the development and deployment of product features, creatively solving problems, building tooling and automation, promoting best practices, stewardship of our shared applications and infrastructure, capturing and reporting productivity metrics, and consulting for engineering teams on complex technical problems. Our mission is to be the most trusted and helpful recommendation service, and you will play an important part in getting us there.

The Engineering Manager for DevOps manages the DevOps engineers and the Senior Developer in Test and is accountable for the team's roadmap and results. They are expected to delegate by default, collaborate with their engineering partners, and leadership to set direction, provide constraints, prioritize, and communicate progress, changes, and outcomes for the team's work. The Engineering Manager for DevOps is also expected to provide a best-in-class culture and environment to support and grow their multiple direct reports through mentorship and advocacy.

This is a management-track position which will report directly to the Director of Platform Engineering. This is a remote position.

Responsibilities:


Performance management, professional development, and overall health of a diverse team of 4 engineers distributed across the U.S. and Europe


Recruit and onboard new team members


Cultivate an inclusive team culture with a respectful and collaborative environment


Accountability and development of the roadmap, prioritization and re-prioritization decisions, celebrations, process, and end results of the team in collaboration with the other team leads


Define success, setting constraints, highlighting potential trade-offs, and allowing the team to collaborate.


Build cross-functional relationships by communicating scope, trade-off, timing, uncertainty, and prioritization decisions to direct reports, leadership, and partners.


Contribute to and advocate for the team through engineering-wide projects


Contribute to engineering-wide plans as a member of Wirecutter's engineering management team.


Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:


You have at least two of years of engineering management experience; including setting goals and crafting growth or continuous improvement plans for your team members.


You have at least two of years of experience in building and scaling applications, environments, and software development process


You have at least two years of experience leading and facilitating decision making for technical teams.


You have experience managing or working with distributed, or hybrid, teams.

Preferred Qualifications:


You have experience weighing the benefits and trade-offs associated with microservices architecture, cloud computing services (AWS, GCP, etc), containerization, smart-clustering, continuous deployments, cache management, and automation.


You have experience advocating for your technical team members and steering multiple stakeholders when needed.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$152,000—$190,000 USD

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.
