Engineering Manager - Creator Data Services

Roblox's engineering team is growing rapidly and we are seeking an engineering leader to help us scale. As an Engineering Manager in the Creator group focusing specifically on our Data Pod, you will lead both the vision of building the next generation data storage to power the millions of experiences on the Roblox Platform. We run the mission critical cloud services, Data Stores, Memory Stores, and Badges, which are crucial for storing game state, such as inventory and scores, and implementing leaderboards, server lists, trading, and achievements. Our team is also responsible for building dashboards to provide insights to Creators using cloud services such as Client/Server Performance and Data Stores. Finally, our team owns the Roblox Extended Services platform, which provides the capability for large experiences to purchase additional resources for existing services like Data Stores and new services built around compute and generative AI.

At its core, this team is focused on solving complex back end distributed systems and storage problems at scale. However, our scope extends to full stack projects spanning all the way from the infrastructure layer, through data storage and data pipelines, microservices, telemetry, game servers, web development, UI, and UX design. This team collaborates on multiple cross-company efforts and our projects are of extremely high importance to Roblox.

You will:

• Become an expert on our technology stack and make sure we solve problems in the right way.

• Balance researching new technologies with a practical approach to realize the research efforts into the Roblox products.

• Author specs for new features and improvements.

• Lead other engineers by example and through the technical direction.

• Collaborate with different teams to improve existing and develop new functionality, pipelines, and workflow.

• Be guided by the company vision to put the Roblox community first and represent the company through thought leadership

You have:

• Versatility: You’re a jack of all trades and you have mastered several languages and technologies already; you can easily adapt to any situation when the need arises and come up with the right solution.

• Creativity: You take a creative and strategic approach to solving hard problems and driving new tools/functionality for our developers

• Team-orientation: You have a personality that invigorates the team around you and you are used to leading and growing technical teams in any situation.

You are:

• Battle ready: You have experience defining the architecture for millions of users and are excited about technical challenges. You can be hands-on and still define an architecture from scratch and make sure it can scale from a few users to hundreds of millions.

• Experienced: You have 10+ years of experience in large scale software deployments with a proven track record of leading teams (5+) and delivering highly performant technical solutions. You have a BS in Computer Science or a similar technical field (MS/Ph.D. is a definite plus).

• Knowledgeable: You have a deep understanding of all the components required to build modern large-scale infrastructure. You can recommend one route versus another and bring a team of engineers to a consensus. You also love to pick up new technologies as the landscape evolves.

For roles that are based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay for this position is as shown below. The actual base pay is dependent upon a variety of job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs and market demand. Therefore, in some circumstances, the actual salary could fall outside of this expected range. This pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. All full-time employees are also eligible for equity compensation and for benefits as described on this page.

Annual Salary Range
$293,800—$343,340 USD

Roles that are based in an office are onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday (unless otherwise noted).
