Engineer - Developer Experience

The role / impact

This role is central to the engineering experience at Xero, focusing on the architecture and implementation of distributed systems that empower our entire developer community. You will take ownership of building and refactoring complex systems to ensure they are scalable and high-performing, directly influencing how we manage eventing and webhooks across the business.

By making major code design decisions and contributing to engineering standards, you will help solve technical problems at scale. Your work ensures our internal integrations are seamless, providing the robust infrastructure needed to support Xero's technical strategy and future growth.

The team / how they connect

The Horizon team is a split group of engineers based across Melbourne and New Zealand who collaborate closely to manage our eventing platform and data discovery tools. We maintain a strong connection through regular technical discussions and shared goals, ensuring a supportive environment where we can learn from each other and solve complex problems together.

The team is currently working on

• Managing an eventing platform built using Apache Kafka and Confluent Cloud to enable seamless internal integrations.

• Rolling out Postgres from the SQL database engine to enhance our eventing strategy and data discovery capabilities.

• Finalising webhooks implementations and building out the technical strategy for upcoming eventing architecture.

• Utilising a modern tech stack including Terraform, AWS, C#, and TypeScript to drive engineering enablement and productivity.

Where and how you can work

This role is based in Melbourne with a flexible hybrid approach to work. While there are no mandated office days, our team values connection and typically heads into the Melbourne office twice a week to collaborate in person and foster our team culture.

Here are some of the things we are looking for

• You bring a deep understanding of system design and architectural patterns to build high-quality software.

• Your background includes working with Kafka or similar event-driven architectures to solve complex integration challenges.

• You possess a solid grasp of infrastructure as code using Terraform and experience navigating AWS environments.

• Implementing solutions in C# or TypeScript is something you are comfortable with as part of a polyglot approach.

• A passion for technical excellence and a growth mindset allows you to proactively share knowledge and mentor those around you.

• You enjoy the autonomy of making major design decisions and contributing to the evolution of engineering frameworks.
