Job overview
Speedway Motors is looking for an Engine Shop Machinist to join our team of automotive enthusiasts. In this role, you’ll help machine, repair, and enhance automotive engines by setting up and operating a variety of machine shop equipment to meet precise specifications and tolerances. This position is ideal for someone with a strong mechanical background who enjoys hands-on work, precision craftsmanship, and being around engines every day.
Experienced candidates may also have the opportunity to operate our engine dynamometer (Dyno) to support engine rebuilds and performance testing. You’ll work alongside a team that shares a passion for cars and racing while helping ensure engines are built with the quality and attention to detail our customers expect.
Here are the specifics:
Operate a variety of manual shop equipment including lathes, saws, shears, brakes, drill presses, grinders, and hand tools.
Disassemble and clean engine components while preparing them for machining or assembly.
Read job specifications and determine proper machine setup and adjustments.
Measure components and finished parts using precision measuring instruments such as gauges, calipers, and micrometers.
Assist with cylinder head assembly and crankshaft balancing.
Tune carburetors and fuel injectors as needed.
Remove burrs, sharp edges, and imperfections from machined parts.
Assist with engine assembly projects as needed.
Perform minor machine maintenance including cleaning and lubrication.
Work with team members to complete customer orders with accuracy, quality, and efficiency.
Willing to learn/train in all aspects of the job including machine maintenance such as cleaning and oiling machines.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment
Follow established Speedway and OSHA safety policies and procedures
Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance
Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and safety protocols
Take ownership of assigned responsibilities and follow through on commitments

Work Environment
Our Engine Building Shop is clean, organized, and temperature controlled, providing a comfortable environment to focus on quality work.
Physical requirements include:
Occasionally lift and carry up to 50 lbs and rarely push/pull up to 100 lbs
Frequent walking and standing
Occasional bending, twisting, kneeling, or reaching above shoulder level
Frequent use of hands for fine manipulation, grasping, and power tools
Occasional exposure to dust, fumes, and shop chemicals
Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts
What you’ll need to succeed in this position:
High school diploma or GED required and mechanical aptitude or experience as a mechanic required
Atleast 18 years of age
Familiarity with basic machine shop equipment
Racing background or engine building experience is strongly preferred
Ability to read blueprints and use precision measuring tools
Ability to perform basic math including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
Commitment to working safely and following established safety procedures
Strong teamwork and communication skills
