What is the role?
Michaels Energy is seeking an experienced engineer to deliver technical support for utility energy efficiency programs in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York, and support measurement and verification work in New York and Connecticut. This position will perform energy assessments and detailed studies on commercial and industrial buildings, perform energy calculations, program and launch data logging equipment, and write reports.
Technical tasks include identifying decarbonization opportunities and energy efficiency measures, diagnosing building HVAC control issues, assessing equipment condition, estimating project costs, and performing site visits. Client and customer communication is critical in this role. Types of communication include meetings, presentations, and non-technical and technical writing. Work may also include new construction design consulting for energy efficiency, energy modeling, review of facility decarbonization plans, site visits to assess decarbonization feasibility, and third-party review of calculations. This position will need to help customers navigate implementation of electrification projects, including consulting on structural, electrical, and other considerations when converting to electric heat, working with contractors, and discussing typical issues encountered. We are looking for an engineer who is passionate about energy efficiency and removing barriers for the customer that will result in the implementation of projects.
After 3 months, you have
Learned company processes and procedures
Completed at least two energy audits independently
Completed at least three M&V site visits independently
After 6 months, you have
Fully trained on at least three energy efficiency programs
Completed 10 energy audits independently
Reviewed two facility decarbonization plans
Led customer meetings and project report outs
What are we looking for?
Four-year degree, preferably in electrical, mechanical, chemical, or building systems engineering
Three to ten years’ experience combining any of the following:
Energy efficiency industry – e.g., utilities or performance contracting
HVAC operations, controls, and/or building energy investigations
Utility program experience in retro-commissioning, ASHRAE level 2 energy audits, or custom rebate calculations
Managing building retrofit projects
Implementing controls upgrades
Commissioning HVAC retrofits
HVAC Design or Electrical Design as part of a Design/Build or A&E Firm
Energy modeling using Open Studio or eQuest
PE (Professional Engineer) is preferred but not required
Excels at communicating complicated ideas to a variety of audiences
Skilled at interfacing with contractors and building owners
Deep interest in energy, systems, and process efficiency, and improving productivity
Lifetime self-learner
Ability to travel up to 30% regionally (upstate NY, CT, MA) with minimal (~2/month) overnight stays

Pay Scale
$115,000 – $135,000
