Reporting Relationship

The Employment Counsellor will work under the direction of MFN Ontario Works/ LDM Department Manager (DM).

 

Position Summary

Works as a team player in the delivery of the Ontario Works program, the Employment Counsellor will assist with the Client Intake process.  The Employment Counsellor will be responsible for the delivery of opportunities that promotes and provides Ontario Works clients and/or participants abilities to learn and apply new skills, gain valuable work experience to reach employment goals and become independent.  At the same time participants are enhancing their job-related skills, they provide much needed services to the MFN community.

 

Essential Functions

Works directly with individuals to coordinate community placements for training and employment opportunities.

Provide Counselling and assessment procedures to identify short- and long-term goals and make appropriate referrals.

Works with clients to develop job search skills and career action plans.

Develop annual workplan to include professional development.

Provide files and case management for tracking of client’s needs and progress.

Assess client and community needs in collaboration with Training Hub Centre staff for coordinating and facilitating workshops, information sessions and training workshops.

Develop Workshop curriculum, materials and resources with evaluations and follow-up.

Assist with potential sponsors in the development of project proposals for submission.

Understands M’Chigeeng First Nation and surrounding area labour market and labour force.

Develop client skills inventory resources in collaboration with Hub Centre staff for employment referral staffing needs.

Create Networking opportunities with other training providers, employers, job centres, educational institutions, professionals, etc.

Maintain statistical data.

Maintain client file maintenance records for follow up on clients progress up to exit from program.

Develops required reports to appropriate government service providers.

Performs other duties as assigned from time to time to assist in the promotion of the organization’s mission.

Maintains working knowledge of Ontario Works Act, Service Canada and other legislation relating to client services for training, education, and employment needs.

Ensure program and service needs for MFN members are delivered in a timely and professional manner.

Assists in the initial intake process, counselling, appropriate referrals and placement supports.

Assists in the facilitation in the development and delivery of various workshops and training initiatives as required.

Assists with planning, organizing and delivering client-oriented activities, workshops and information sessions in collaboration with other community programs and services for training opportunities that address life skills, job search and interview techniques and personal and family budgeting.

For client employment and/or training referrals, must have knowledge of MNF public social organizations and private and public businesses.

Develop and maintain working relationships and partnerships with internal programs and services and external organizations for the benefit of client service.

Ensures accurate records and reporting are maintained on all program activities and service delivery.

Assist with the establishment, monitoring and maintaining a database of client skills inventory, community placement sites and opportunities.

Maintains effective communication, both verbal and oral, for community linkages to ensure promotion and development of related training programs and services.

Monitor and follow-up on community placements and document evaluation reviews, results and successes.

Provide a monthly narrative and statistical report to the Department Manager for the Social Service Committee or Chief and Council

Ensures compliance of MFN Personnel, Finance and Administrative policies and procedures

Experience with Excel and MS Word applications, other software applications.

Develop and implement annual work plan.

Attends internal monthly staff meetings and prepares monthly staff reports.

Participates in staff development opportunities for skills improvement and program benefit as advised by DM.

Provides transportation for clients and band members when necessary for training and employment opportunities.

 

Qualifications and Requirements

Preferred

Post Secondary Diploma relevant field of study, with OSSD.

Social skills development and/or social counselling training and/or education

Life Skills Coach Certificate

Excellent presentation, writing and problem-solving skills.

Knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Works and LDM programs.

Knowledge and understanding of MNF public social organizations and private businesses.

Previous experience with non-profit community organizations including in a voluntary capacity.

Minimum

Post Secondary Diploma in relevant field of study, with OSSD or Equivalency with related work and/or volunteer experience will be considered.

First Aid and CPR updated Certification

Ability to maintain accurate statistical data and records.

Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with clients, staff, community agencies and the public.

Have excellent inter-personal skills.

Good working knowledge of computers and related software

Have ability to work in a team environment.

Other

Able to work appropriately and sensitively with confidential information and must always maintain confidentiality.

Must be personable, professional and empathic. 

Must have strong interpersonal and effective communications skills, both written and oral form for clients, co-workers, internal and external organizations

Makes program related individual informed decisions when required.

Ability to adapt and handle stressful environments and situations.

Working knowledge of office procedures

Knowledge of and is an advocate of MFN’s vision and goals

Must have knowledge and/or experience with the culture, tradition, history and customs of the Anishinabek

Understanding and fluency of Ojibwe is an asset

Must have valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle

Must be willing to work flexible hours to meet the needs of clients and program deliverables (weekends, evenings and holidays) with minimal supervision/direction

Current (30 day) CRC mandatory and must be original or certified copy

 

 CRC/VSS Rationale 

CRC must be thirty (30) days current and be an original or certified copy.  All individuals applying for employment with MFN Education programs are required to submit a Vulnerable Sector Screen and Criminal Record Check as these individuals will be working directly/indirectly with students.  All individuals employed under the education program must have a record clear of charges and convictions relating to child sexual harassment or abuse of any kind.
