Program Description:
The National Weather Service (NWS) Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD) Radar Operations Center (ROC) in Norman, Oklahoma, is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and modernization of the NEXRAD radar network (WSR-88D system), which is essential for the U.S.'s weather monitoring and forecasting. The ROC provides 24/7 technical support, oversees upgrades, and collaborates with research institutions and government agencies to enhance radar technology. It also manages the dissemination of critical radar data used for weather forecasting and severe weather alerts, ensuring the continued accuracy and reliability of this vital national infrastructure.

This role directly supports the ROC Maintenance Team, which is responsible for the overall sustainment and reliability of the WSR-88D system. The team's mission is to maintain the system's high reliability, improve its operational capabilities, and ensure the continued delivery of high-quality meteorological services. A key function of the Maintenance Team is staffing the WSR-88D Hotline, which provides 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week, expert consultation to all U.S. Government Field Sites and other users.

Job Responsibilities:

• Training & Certification
Successfully complete a year-long, intensive training program—including mentorship, classroom instruction, and On-the-Job Training (OJT)—to become a subject matter expert on all WSR-88D hardware components (e.g., antenna, pedestal, transmitter, receiver).

• Achieve WSR-88D Hotline Certification through this training to provide expert-level technical support to field personnel.

• Become climb-certified to perform maintenance and inspections at heights exceeding 100 feet above ground level.

• Radar Maintenance & Testing

• Perform routine and specialized depot-level maintenance on core WSR-88D systems, components, and subsystems.

• Maintain, operate, and configure the Radar Operations Center's (ROC) Test Bed radar to support system testing, validation, and software development activities.

• Travel up to 25% of the time, for periods up to two weeks, to CONUS, OCONUS, and overseas field sites to:

• Execute complex, depot-level repairs (e.g., replacing the pedestal bull gear).

• Support acceptance testing and other field testing activities.

• Assist local technicians in diagnosing and resolving difficult radar performance and component issues.

• 24/7 Technical Support

• Perform scheduled shift duties on the 24/7/365 Maintenance Hotline in a solo capacity.

• Provide expert radar technical support to field radar technicians, assisting them in troubleshooting and resolving emergent WSR-88D operational and maintenance issues.

Job Requirements:

• Associate's Degree in Electronics Technology or a closely related field.

• Alternatively, completion of equivalent advanced technical coursework and certification from a Military Service or the private sector will be considered.

• Must have experience/knowledge of Radar Systems, specifically ground-based radar (as opposed to airborne systems), is strongly preferred.

• Must have the ability to read and interpret electromechanical schematic diagrams.

• Demonstrated experience in the operation, installation, troubleshooting, and repair of complex electronic systems and equipment.

• Prior experience in an engineering support or maintenance support position is desired.

• Experience in an Engineering Technician role, including working with engineers on prototype design development and testing, is a plus.

• Knowledge of data processors, software and firmware applications, and computer systems is highly desirable.

• Experience in writing and revising technical documentation for electronic and electromechanical systems and equipment.

• Knowledge of maintenance and operation procedures for complex systems.

• Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat is highly desirable for documentation work.

• Extensive travel (up to 25%) is occasionally required, including trips to domestic and international field sites.

• Must be physically able and willing to perform duties that require working at height, including climbing a 100-ft radar tower, working in confined or tight spaces, and performing physically demanding labor for up to 8-hour periods.
