Animal Care – Dog Team
Reports to: Kennel Lead / Animal Care Supervisor
Compensation: $15.00 per hour
Classification: Part-time, non-exempt
Position Summary
The Animal Care – Dog Team provides daily hands-on care for the dogs at Animal Friends Humane Society. This entry-level role focuses on cleaning, feeding, walking, and monitoring dogs to ensure a safe and healthy kennel environment. Team members also help support enrichment and behavior goals set by the behavior staff, contributing to every dog’s journey from intake to adoption. Training is provided for all core responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
Clean, disinfect, and maintain kennels, play areas, and common spaces
Provide daily feeding, watering, and laundry/dish cleaning duties
Safely walk, exercise, and handle dogs of all sizes and energy levels
Monitor animal health and behavior, promptly reporting changes or concerns
Follow enrichment and training plans established by the behavior team
Restrain dogs for medical procedures or handling as instructed
Maintain accurate records and follow shelter sanitation and disease-control protocols
Assist with intake and adoption preparation tasks as directed
Model safe handling for volunteers and provide support when needed
Interact with adopters and visitors in a professional, welcoming manner
Day in the Life
A typical day as a Dog Team member begins with cleaning and disinfecting kennels to provide each dog a safe, comfortable environment. Throughout the day you’ll prepare meals, walk and exercise dogs of all sizes, and complete laundry and dishes to keep supplies ready. You’ll also observe dogs for any changes in health or behavior and help carry out enrichment or training steps set by the behavior team. The role requires physical work, attention to detail, and a passion for ensuring every dog receives consistent, compassionate care.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required
Prior animal handling, kennel, or shelter experience preferred but not required
Training provided for all core responsibilities
Dependable, compassionate, and able to work in a team environment
Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs and handle dogs of all sizes
Strong work ethic and comfort with repetitive physical tasks (cleaning, walking, feeding)
Physical Demands & Work Environment
Work performed in a kennel environment with exposure to cleaning chemicals, loud noises, and zoonotic diseases (illnesses that can spread from animals to humans)
Frequent bending, stooping, lifting, and standing for extended periods of time
Work involves exposure to all weather conditions when walking dogs
Emotional resilience required when working with shelter animals and outcomes
Schedule
Part-time position, 16 hours per week.
Shifts are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday.
Weekend and holiday availability is required.
