The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city through the strategic deployment of resources, focusing on both crime prevention and addressing quality-of-life concerns while building lasting community relationships.
The Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Legal Matters provides legal guidance to the Police Department and is responsible for advising all members of the Department on all legal matters affecting the Department, including major criminal and civil litigation and important legislative and judicial developments. The office monitors and facilitates the relationship between the Department and the rest of the criminal justice system and assists members of the service in interpreting and enforcing state, federal, and local laws; ensures that the policies and practices of the department are lawful and are fairly applied; and develops legislation in accordance with the needs of the Department and public safety concerns.
Reporting directly to the Deputy Commissioner, Legal Matters (DCLM), the Director, Special Projects will:
1. Serve as a key advisor to the DCLM, providing input in the formulation of strategies concerning a wide variety of legal and policy matters:
2. Serve as a point of contact for research, analysis, and policy development on major issues with the purview of the office of the DCLM;
3. Manage and direct major, long-term legal projects involving the Office of the DCLM:
4. Aid in the preparation of reports, proposals, briefings, and other materials for the Department's executive staff: and
5. Represent the DCLM in key meetings, both inside and outside the Department.

EXECUTIVE AGENCY COUNSEL - 95005
Admission to the New York State Bar; and four years of recent full-time responsible, relevant, satisfactory legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar, eighteen months of which must have been in the supervision of other attorneys, in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity, or performing highly complex and significant legal work.
Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.
