What’s the role

The Director of Special Education is directly responsible for improving the academic and behavioral performance of students with specialized services. The Director of Special Education manages and coordinates all specialized services including special education, 504 plans, Academic and Social Emotional Interventions, and English Language Development. The overarching goal is to ensure that each student has the appropriate individualized support plan to ensure their academic and social emotional success.

What you’ll do

• Oversee all Specialized Services programming, including Special Education, 504 Plans, Academic and Social-Emotional Interventions, and English Language Learner (ELL) services.

• Implement, supervise, and evaluate intervention programs and curricula to ensure alignment with Philadelphia Hebrew Public’s mission and academic goals.

• Coordinate and manage all aspects of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and 504 Plan processes, ensuring timely evaluations, meetings, and compliance.

• Supervise evaluations and related services, including speech, occupational therapy, counseling, and psychological assessments.

• Oversee and monitor the delivery of School Social Work and Mental Health services, including coordination with external partner organizations.

• Chair manifestation determination meetings and other special education-related conferences, ensuring due process and legal compliance.

• Ensure implementation of accommodations and modifications in the general education setting to support student access and success.

• Maintain full compliance with all federal, state, and local special education laws, regulations, and documentation requirements.

• Serve as a key member of the School Leadership Team, providing expertise on student support systems and inclusive education practices.

• Conduct formal and informal evaluations of special education teachers, service providers, and support staff, providing coaching and professional development.

• Collaborate with the Head of School and leadership team to promote a school culture of equity, inclusion, and high expectations for all students.

• Analyze data related to student progress, interventions, and compliance to inform program improvement and resource allocation.

• Foster partnerships with families, community agencies, and district representatives to support student outcomes and wraparound services.

Minimum Requirements:

• Legally authorized to work in the USA

• Master’s Degree in Special Education required

• At least five (5) years of urban education experience required

• PA state certification in special education required

• PA state certification in administration is a plus

• Knowledge of Federal and State Special Education Laws required

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of teaching methods, curriculum, and education programs designed for students with learning, physical and behavioral disabilities

• Knowledge of Positive Behavior Supports related to individuals with learning, developmental, and/or emotional disabilities

• Knowledge of English Language Development, teaching practices and programming

• Knowledge of Academic and Social Emotional Interventions

• Strong communication skills and ability to develop trusting relationships with students, staff, and families
