Job Description
Are you passionate about shaping the future of planetary surface mobility at the system level? Lunar Outpost, a trailblazer in space robotics and mobility systems, is seeking a Director of Mobility Integration to serve as a senior technical authority and thought leader across rover and mobility system development.
In this late‑career role, you will guide the company’s mobility architecture, integration strategy, concepts of operations (ConOps), and system‑level performance analysis across interacting subsystems and platforms. You will play a critical role in aligning subsystem designs into a cohesive, high‑performance mobility system capable of operating in extreme planetary environments. This position requires deep technical expertise, strong systems thinking, and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both internal stakeholders and external customers, including NASA.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the technical authority for integrated mobility system design, coordinating mobility performance across interacting subsystems and the rover platform as a whole
Lead and coordinate interfaces between power storage, powertrain, suspension, chassis, structures, thermal, and controls, ensuring compatibility and balanced system performance
Inform and guide vehicle dynamics modeling, mobility capability assessments, and performance predictions during nominal and dynamic operating scenarios
Provide strategic planning and technical leadership for mobility system roadmaps, including evaluation of emerging technologies, architectural trade studies, and long‑term capability development
Define, review, and mature mobility CONOPS, including surface operations, hazard negotiation, fault responses, and mission‑level mobility constraints
Serve as Interim Mobility Integrated Product Team (IPT) Lead for the LTVS Program until formal IPT leadership is established, ensuring continuity of technical direction and integration rigor
Coordinate and integrate partners, suppliers, and vendors into the overall mobility system, aligning external designs with internal requirements and interfaces
Lead and coordinate interdisciplinary inputs to the Integrated System Performance Analysis, synthesizing data from multiple technical disciplines into clear conclusions and recommendations
Review and guide system‑level requirements allocation, verification strategies, and margin management related to mobility performance
Prepare and present technical briefings, analyses, and recommendations to NASA and other customers, supporting design reviews, milestone decisions, and program commitments
Mentor senior and mid‑career engineers, promoting best practices in vehicle engineering, systems engineering, integration discipline, and technical rigor
Work directly with the Chief Engineer for the LTVS Program, serving as a trusted advisor on mobility‑related technical matters
Report to the CTO for mobility-related technical architecture
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field
20+ years of experience in mobility systems, vehicle systems, robotics, aerospace, or automotive engineering, with significant system‑level integration responsibility
Demonstrated expertise in vehicle dynamics, mobility performance, and subsystem integration
Understanding of power system and integration with drivetrain and promotion.
Proven experience leading or influencing cross‑disciplinary engineering teams without direct line authority
Strong background in systems engineering principles, including interfaces, requirements flow‑down, trade studies, and performance analysis
Ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences
Experience working with government customers, including NASA or other spaceflight organizations
Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills
U.S. Person
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant technical discipline
Direct experience with planetary rovers, off‑road vehicles, or advanced mobility platforms
Experience supporting major design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, etc.) for complex space or robotic systems
Background in hardware qualification, environmental testing, or flight‑like validation
Experience serving as a chief engineer, subsystem lead, or integrated product team lead
Familiarity with partnered development models involving commercial vendors and government stakeholders
