We're hiring a Director of Engineering (Platform Services & Experiences) to lead our newly formed Platform Services & Experiences organization. This foundational role will architect and build the backend services, APIs, and shared frontend experiences that enable Boulevard's product teams to build features rapidly while maintaining consistency and scalability.
Reporting to the SVP of Engineering, you'll be responsible for the technical services that power Boulevard's product development: business capability services, external API platform, shared component libraries, and integration frameworks. Your work will directly impact product team velocity, customer experience consistency, and our ability to scale across multiple product lines.

This is a transformational leadership role where you'll build the Platform Services & Experiences organization from the ground up, creating the backend services and shared experiences that enable rapid product innovation while maintaining technical excellence and user experience consistency.

• Domains of ownership:

• Backend Services & APIs - Build and own reusable backend services and foundational business primitives (customer, appointment, payment, inventory).

• External API Platform - External APIs, and API management infrastructure for third-party developers and business integrations.

• Shared Frontend Experiences - Shared component libraries, design systems, and frontend architecture that ensures consistent user experiences across platforms.

• Authentication & Authorization Services - Identity platform and RBAC services supporting complex permission models across multiple products.

• Integration Framework - Integrations to external platforms (QuickBooks, Shopify, Google Analytics, etc.).

• Product Capabilities - Core product areas like checkout, vouchers, gift cards, memberships, and packages until dedicated product teams scale.

• Internal Operations Tools - Admin platforms and internal tools supporting customer success, operations, and business functions.

• Key projects & initiatives:

• Auth0 Migration: Lead migration from custom authentication to Auth0, enabling SSO, MFA, and advanced security features.

• Monolith Decomposition: Establish service extraction patterns and lead architectural evolution to support multi-product platform with composable business primitives.

• API Management Platform: Build comprehensive API gateway, developer portal, and external integration capabilities.

• Feature Flagging System: Deploy enterprise-grade feature flagging across all product teams for safer releases and experimentation.

• Integrations Framework: Create standardized patterns for external platform integrations (financial, e-commerce, analytics).

• Internal Tooling Platform: Develop RBAC-based admin platform supporting customer success, operations, and compliance needs.

• Mobile Platform Infrastructure: Establish cross-platform mobile development capabilities and shared mobile services.

What you’ll do here:

• Backend Service Architecture & Modular Design: Establish foundational business primitives and composable service architecture with robust API contracts that product teams can leverage to build features rapidly.

• Cross-Platform Leadership: Partner with stakeholders, R&D Leadership, and Product Engineering Directors to evolve Boulevard web and mobile app experiences while executing on an ambitious product roadmap and providing the right service abstractions.

• Team Building & Management: Lead and nurture engineering managers, empowering high-performance teams, coach through growth challenges, and partner with Talent Acquisition to grow and retain highly cohesive and motivated teams.

• Quality & Excellence: Uphold quality bar and practices in R&D, delivering high-quality, efficient, scalable, and maintainable cross-platform user experiences with shared component libraries and design systems.

• Performance Management & Metrics: Establish clear goals supporting company and departmental OKRs, be accountable to outcomes, and identify, track, and act upon quality, velocity, and application health metrics.

• Culture Development & Technical Standards: Nurture a culture of learning, continuous improvement, and best practices while driving technical standards for API design, service communication, and external integration platforms.

What you’ll need to thrive:

• Backend Services Leadership: 12+ years of experience building backend services and APIs, with 6+ years leading teams of 35+ engineers focused on business capability services that other teams consume, ideally in high-growth Vertical SaaS, e-Commerce, or Fintech companies.

• Service Architecture Expertise: Proven track record of decomposing monoliths into business capability services while maintaining product team velocity and system reliability.

• Frontend Architecture Experience: Deep experience with shared component libraries, design systems, and frontend architecture patterns that scale across multiple product teams.

• API & Integration Platform: Extensive experience building external APIs, partner integration platforms, and API management infrastructure for B2B SaaS environments.

• Cross-functional Collaboration: Strong partnership skills with Product Engineering, Design, Infrastructure, and business stakeholders, understanding how platform services enable product outcomes.

• Team Building & Scaling: Experience growing and rapidly scaling engineering teams across multiple timezones, with focus on backend services, API platform, and shared frontend experiences.

• Technical Communication: Ability to explain service architecture decisions and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders across the organization.

How we’ll take care of you:

Your total budgeted cash compensation for this role is between $226,000 and $324,000 USD, depending on your current skills, experience, training, and overall market demands. This range is subject to change, and there is always room for growth and advancement.
