Role Summary
The Business & Portfolio Director partners with the Group Leader of Data Content to run the business: leading the portfolio operating rhythm, financial management (OpEx/CapEx/CTM), headcount planning, governance and controls, and cross-functional execution. The role acts as a delegate for the Group Leader, providing decision-making cover, managing leadership forums and operating cadences, and ensuring our outcomes, risks and budgets are visible and under control.
Role Responsibilities & Key Accountabilities
• Own the Data Content portfolio operating rhythm (QBR/MBR/ABR; weekly portfolio/financial reviews), ensuring timely, accurate inputs and clear decisions.
• Portfolio planning & prioritisation: maintain the investment backlog and annual plan; align initiatives to outcomes, critical metrics and risk appetite; stop/shape/sequence work to meet funding and capacity.
• Financial management: build and manage the budget (OpEx/CapEx/CTM), forecast and month-end close; track actuals vs plan; drive efficiencies and benefits realisation with Finance Business Partners.
• Workforce & headcount planning: partner with Talent and Engineering to define the workforce strategy, hiring plan and location mix; track fulfilment; manage contractor ramp-down/up; ensure compliance to governance.
• Governance & controls: operate the portfolio governance calendar; publish RAID, approvals, decision logs and scorecards; ensure Clarity and other systems of record are up to date and auditable.
• Operating cadence management: design agendas, pre-reads and follow-ups for leadership forums; ensure actions, risks and funding decisions are captured, communicated and completed.
• Collaborator management: engage Product, Engineering, Content Operations, Finance and Microsoft partnership teams to resolve interlocks, dependencies and funding issues.
• Delegation: act as a formal delegate for the Group Leader of Data Content, including chairing forums, representing at cross-group boards, and taking decisions within Delegations of Authority (DoA).
• indictor & benefits tracking: define leading/lagging indicators, maintain dashboards and publish monthly scorecards; ensure benefits are quantified, baselined and realised.
• Continuous improvement: simplify processes, standardise templates and automate reporting; drive portfolio hygiene across tooling and artefacts (charters, arguments, scorecards).
Essential Skills & Competencies (Director – Project & Programme Management)
• Leadership of large, complex portfolios and multi-disciplinary teams.
• Advanced financial competence: budgeting, forecasting, OpEx/CapEx, CTM and benefits realisation.
• Operating model and governance design; expert in operating cadences and executive communications.
• Workforce planning and headcount governance; experience with contractor management and location strategy.
• Data-driven decision-making with excellent Excel/BI skills and familiarity with enterprise portfolio tools (e.g., Clarity).
• Clear, concise executive communication; ability to influence and secure decisions across senior collaborators.
• Critical thinking, change leadership, and ability to drive transformation across functions.
Qualifications & Experience
• Extensive experience (8+ years) in Business Management, Portfolio/Programme Management or PMO within data/technology-led organisations.
• Proven track record running budgets >£10m and portfolios with multiple interdependent programmes.
• Experience operating in highly regulated environments and working with risk/control functions.
• Degree or equivalent experience in Business, Finance, Technology or related field; professional certifications (e.g., P3O, MSP, PMP) advantageous.
Business & Sector Expertise
• Understanding of data content operations and product-led delivery models.
• Familiarity with cloud migration economics and workforce strategies in engineering and content.
• Knowledge of portfolio governance, risk appetite and audit requirements in financial services.
Leadership & Management Experience
• Leadership of cross-functional teams and forums; ability to chair executive reviews and drive decisions.
• Vendor and partner engagement, including contract ramp-down/up coordination with Finance and Legal.
• Coaching and development of analysts and PMO professionals; building a high-performance culture.
Personal Skills & Capabilities
• Self-starter with strong judgement and bias for action.
• Structured, diligent and resilient; able to simplify and standardise.
