Job Description

Company Overview:
At Trace Machina, we are passionate about accelerating the software development lifecycle. Our flagship product, NativeLink, is a high-performance build caching and remote execution system that helps developers speed up build and testing processes, while reducing infrastructure costs. By caching build artifacts intelligently and distributing tasks across multiple machines, NativeLink helps teams optimize their workflows. To continue driving innovation, we are looking for a Developer Advocate focused on Nix and Rust to help developers harness the power of NativeLink.

Position Overview:
We are looking for a Developer Advocate who is deeply knowledgeable in Nix and/or Rust, two technologies that are transforming the way software is built and deployed. In this role, you will help developers improve their development and build processes using NativeLink, and actively engage with both the Nix and Rust communities. You will create content, deliver presentations, and engage directly with developers to help them solve problems, share best practices, and make the most of NativeLink in their workflows.

As a Developer Advocate at Trace Machina, you will:

• Engage with the Nix and Rust Communities: Represent Trace Machina in key Nix and Rust forums, such as Reddit, Stack Overflow, GitHub, and specialized community channels. Provide technical support, answer questions, and gather feedback on how NativeLink can further enhance their workflows.

• Content Creation: Develop technical documentation, tutorials, blog posts, and educational videos that demonstrate how to optimize Nix and Rust workflows with NativeLink. Make complex concepts accessible and engaging for developers at all skill levels.

• Public Speaking: Speak at Nix and Rust-related events, conferences, meetups, and webinars. Create live demos, workshops, and tutorials to showcase the power of NativeLink in modern build systems and how it complements Nix and Rust development.

• Community Program Development: Design and manage initiatives like hackathons, developer challenges, and ambassador programs that encourage the community to share their experiences, contribute to open-source projects, and engage with Trace Machina.

• Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams to relay community feedback and help guide the future development of NativeLink, ensuring it meets the needs of the Nix and Rust communities.

• Metrics and Reporting: Track key community engagement metrics and provide regular reports on trends, opportunities, and the impact of advocacy efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and manage community engagement strategies that increase awareness of NativeLink within the Nix and Rust communities.

• Create educational content such as tutorials, blog posts, and videos that showcase the integration of NativeLink with Nix and Rust projects.

• Lead presentations, webinars, and live coding sessions at Nix and Rust conferences and meetups to engage with developers and promote NativeLink.

• Collaborate with product and engineering teams to gather insights from the community, improving NativeLink's functionality to better support Nix and Rust users.

• Foster relationships with influencers, contributors, and leaders within the Nix and Rust ecosystems to extend Trace Machina’s reach and drive adoption.

• Track community engagement and developer feedback to help shape the future of NativeLink’s development, ensuring it meets the needs of the Nix and Rust ecosystems.

Requirements:

• 3+ years of experience in developer advocacy, community relations, or similar roles, with strong expertise in Nix and/or Rust.

• Proven experience in creating technical content (documentation, tutorials, blog posts, videos) for Nix and/or Rust developers.

• Strong public speaking skills, with experience presenting at conferences, meetups, or webinars.

• A portfolio of open-source contributions, technical blogs, or videos that demonstrate your expertise in Nix, Rust, or modern software development.

• Knowledge of NativeLink or similar build systems, with a strong understanding of how build caching and remote execution systems improve developer productivity.

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to a broad audience.

• Self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaborate effectively across teams.

• Passion for community engagement, developer empowerment, and problem-solving.

Bonus Skills:

• Experience with NixOS, Nixpkgs, or similar Nix-based tools.

• Proficiency with Rust development tools, including Cargo, Rust crates, and Rust ecosystems.

• Experience with distributed systems, continuous integration, and cloud-based infrastructure.

• Familiarity with build systems such as Bazel, CMake, or others that work with Nix or Rust.
