Quick Summary

The Electronic Systems for Experiments (ESE) Group in CERN’s Experimental Physics Department develops and supports electronic systems for the detection of particles in high-energy collisions at the Large Hadron Collider.

Job Description

At CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Introduction

The Electronic Systems for Experiments (ESE) Group in CERN’s Experimental Physics Department develops and supports electronics for particle physics experiments, from R&D through production, testing, and maintenance. Within ESE, the Front-End (FE) section designs and integrates on-detector systems for signal processing, data transmission, and power distribution, addressing challenging requirements such as radiation tolerance, low-mass materials, and high component density. As an Electronics Engineer in this section, you will take responsibility for the design, testing, and integration of these systems into CERN experiments, working within multi-disciplinary and international teams to ensure performance, quality, and reliability.

Functions

• Design, build and integrate complex detector systems and the required electronics, collaborating closely with physicists, engineers and specialised technicians.
• Design and develop complex multi-chip electronic modules and electronic boards integrating mixed-signal ASICs and FPGAs for particle detectors.
• Prototype, develop, test, and debug highly specialised on-detector electronics.
• Develop and commission systems for laboratory-based and mass-production testing of electronic systems.
• Manage procurement and large-volume manufacturing of electronic components and systems through industrial contractors.
• Support production and quality assurance programs with collaborating institutes and industrial partners.
• Design and maintain infrastructure for the integration and commissioning of modules into CERN experiments.
• Guide and mentor students, technicians, and early-career scientists and engineers.
• Present project progress and outcomes at collaboration meetings and international conferences.
• Document designs, processes, and systems.

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Electronics Engineering or a related field.

Experience:

• Expertise in designing, developing, and validating complex electronic systems integrating mixed-signal ASICs, power management circuits, and optoelectronic components.
• Experience in Signal Integrity (SI) and Power Integrity (PI) analysis across all development stages.
• Experience in industry-standard PCB design environments and SI/PI simulation tools.
• Experience in industrial procurement and manufacturing electronics.
• Expertise in testing and quality assurance of electronic modules.
• Experience in developing test equipment, including firmware and automation software.
• Knowledge of high-density interconnect techniques for multi-chip modules.
• Experience in system-level electro-mechanical integration, covering thermal management, use of low-mass materials, and radiation tolerance.
• Proven ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and communicate technical progress effectively.
• Experience in designing flexible printed circuits is considered a plus.

Technical competencies:

• Knowledge and application of quality and reliability assurance techniques in electronics.
• Knowledge and application of signal integrity techniques.
• Design and simulation of analog/digital electronic circuits.
• Testing and measurement of analog/digital electronic circuits.
• Development of application firmware and software using languages such as VHDL, SystemVerilog, C/C++, and Python.

Behavioural competencies:

• Working in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
• Demonstrating Flexibility: demonstrating a willingness to accept changing circumstances; supporting initiatives for change.
• Achieving Results: dividing extensive work / projects into manageable sub-tasks with clearly defined milestones.
• Solving Problems: finding the information needed to solve problems; making objective judgements based on all the facts available.
• Demonstrating Accountability: working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility and closing date:
