The Agency
Created in 1965, the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) is the largest municipal preservation agency in the nation. It is responsible for protecting New York City's architecturally, historically, and culturally significant buildings and sites by granting them landmark or historic district status and regulating them after designation. The agency is comprised of a panel of 11 commissioners who are appointed by the Mayor and supported by a staff of approximately 80 preservationists, researchers, architects, historians, attorneys, archaeologists, and administrative employees. There are more than 38,000 designated buildings and sites in New York City, most of which are located in 158 historic districts across all five boroughs.

The Team
The Research Department is responsible for the identification, evaluation, documentation and designation of landmarks, interior landmarks, scenic landmarks, and historic districts throughout New York City.

Your Impact
The Deputy Director of Research supervises a team of Landmarks Preservationists as they analyze the city's historic sites and neighborhoods, conduct architectural surveys and historical research, and produces rigorously documented designation reports that recognize the city’s architecturally, culturally, and historically significant buildings and sites and enable their protection. In doing so, the Deputy Director participates in LPC’s equity and inclusion goals, expanding public recognition and equitable representation of New York City’s diverse history, with the opportunity to yield tangible results in preserving landmark buildings and historic districts throughout the city.

Your Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Director of Research, the Deputy Director of Research will manage a staff of Landmarks Preservationists to oversee the evaluation of potential individual landmarks and historic districts in targeted areas throughout the five boroughs; create and manage workplans for surveys, studies, and proposed designations; administer data management, GIS mapping and graphic standards; respond to public inquiries and requests for evaluation; assist with editorial, writing and other special projects; and perform other tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1. A Master’s Degree from an accredited college with a major in historic preservation, architectural history, art history, architecture, or civil engineering and five years of full-time paid experience in architecture, restoration or preservation of historic structures; research in architectural history or in teaching architecture, preservation or architectural history, at least two years of which must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with a major as described above and six years of experience as described above, at least two years of which must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity; or
3. Education and/or experience equivalent to 1 & 2 above.

PREFERRED SKILLS
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Demonstrated expertise in the field of historic preservation and knowledge of the Commission’s research and regulatory work
- Management or Project Management experience
- Excellent writing and oral communication skills
- Experience in or familiarity with land use, preservation, and planning issues in New York City
- Experience with survey, evaluation, research, and documentation of historic resources
- Knowledge of New York City architectural history and styles
- Experience with digital mapping, ArcGIS preferred
- Experience with data management
- Strong customer service approach
- Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently
- Maturity and leadership

Qualification Requirements
1. 3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" and "2". However, all candidates must have a baccalaureate degree as described above and at least two years of full-time paid experience as described above, one year of which must have
been in a supervisory or administrative capacity.
