Role Overview: The senior Database Administrator will be responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance and optimization of enterprise Database Systems. They will also assist with coordinating work tasks to ensure the departmental and firms technology goals are met. This role ensures data integrity, security and high availability, and provides technical leadership for the database-related projects. This role will support both on-premises and cloud infrastructure, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and drive continuous improvement with automation, best practices and emerging technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
• Design, implement, and maintain complex database systems (SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Azure Synapse dedicated Pools, Databricks SQL, etc.)
• Monitor and report on the health of our SQL database environment (databases and integrations) and proactively optimize queries, indexes, and configurations
• Ensure high availability, disaster recovery, and backup strategies are in place and tested
• Manage database security, access controls, and compliance with data protection regulations
• Troubleshoot and resolve database issues, including outages, slowdowns, and data integrity problems
• Collaborate with Data Engineering, Development, DevOps and Infrastructure teams to support application requirements
• Plan and execute database upgrades, migrations, and patching
• Develop and maintain documentation for database architecture, procedures, and standards
• Provide leadership, mentoring and knowledge sharing within the DBA team and broader technology teams
• Evaluate and recommend new database technologies and tools
Desired Skills and Experience:
• 6 – 8 years' experience in Database Administration
• Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300 or AZ 104 certificate) - Advantageous
• Good technical capability, executing as appropriate in the areas of responsibility.
• Experience with automated deployment pipelines and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for database provisioning and configuration
• Experience with cloud data platforms (Azure, AWS, Google)
• Familiarity with data warehouse technologies and modern data architectures, including lakehouses and cloud data warehouses.
• Experience with containerized databases and orchestration using Kubernetes.
• Ability to improve operational efficiency and service delivery.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technology solutions in business terms.
• Understanding of data security, compliance frameworks and risk mitigation strategies.
• Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for relevant database environments.
• 2nd and 3rd level support for all incidents and problems
• Expert knowledge of current and emerging technologies, technology directions and strategic application to business needs
• Basic knowledge of business operations and processes
• Ability to improve operational efficiency and service delivery effectiveness across all lines of business and technology platforms.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technology solutions in business terms, establish rapport and persuade others.
• Experience or strong knowledge of Azure SQL Database and Databricks SQL, including query optimization, security configuration, and integration with modern data architectures.
