Quick Summary

Join the IT Department’s Fabric and Communication Systems (FCS) Group within the Data Centres (DC) Section in Geneva, Switzerland. The ideal candidate will be a Data Centre Engineer who is familiar with the latest IT infrastructure technologies and will work closely with physicists to design and implement data centre systems. The role requires a strong background in networking and a willingness to learn about particle physics.

Job Description

At CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Introduction

You will join the IT Department’s Fabric and Communication Systems (FCS) Group within the Data Centres (DC) Section, where you will contribute to the operation and support of CERN’s Data Centres and associated computing facilities. The section is responsible for managing the full lifecycle of computing equipment, as well as developing, maintaining, and integrating software applications with existing facility monitoring systems.

During CERN’s Accelerator Long Shutdown 3 (LS3) and beyond, you will support major data centre expansion and upgrade projects aimed at almost tripling the current hosting capacity, which is required to support future LHC runs and their increasing computing demands. Your role will involve assisting with infrastructure deployment, system integration, and operational readiness to support future computing requirements.

Functions

• Support data centre expansion and upgrade projects during Long Shutdown 3 (LS3).
• Collaborate with IT teams, facilities engineers, and external partners to deliver infrastructure improvements and provide operational support.
• Design and implement the next-generation computing hardware monitoring system.
• Maintain and improve existing data centre management tools.
• Assist with the installation, configuration, and lifecycle management of computing, storage, and networking equipment.
• Monitor data centre systems, infrastructure performance, and environmental conditions to ensure high availability and reliability.
• Maintain and update operational procedures and contribute to the continuous expansion of the knowledge base to support effective data centre management

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment, demonstrating strong interpersonal and problem-solving abilities.
• Hands-on experience in data centre environments, automation frameworks, or computing systems monitoring will be considered a strong advantage.

Technical competencies:

• Knowledge of programming techniques and languages.
• Knowledge and deployment of computing hardware.
• Installation, operation and maintenance (preventive and corrective) of computing systems.

Behavioural competencies:

• Working in Teams: cooperating constructively with others in the pursuit of team goals; balancing personal goals with team goals.
• Achieving Results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations
• Solving Problems: testing solutions for long-term suitability, cross-checking with all concerned before implementation.
