ABOUT THE ROLE
The Energy Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing energy management strategies across data center operations in Spain. The role focuses on optimizing energy efficiency, ensuring regulatory compliance, supporting renewable energy sourcing, and promoting sustainable practices across all facilities.
The Energy Manager will lead the implementation of the Energy Efficiency Program (EEP) and the ISO 50001 Energy Management System, while ensuring alignment with corporate sustainability objectives and industry best practices.
This role also requires close collaboration with the country leader, operations, design and construction, finance, and external stakeholders such as energy utilities, suppliers, and regulatory bodies.
Key Responsibilities
Energy Performance Management
Design and implement the Energy Efficiency Program (EEP) across all data center sites.
Monitor and analyse energy performance indicators including:
PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness)
WUE (Water Usage Effectiveness)
CUE (Carbon Usage Effectiveness)
COP (Coefficient of Performance)
Deliver detailed energy performance reporting, including breakdown by:
IT Load
Cooling Systems
UPS Systems
Mechanical and Electrical Infrastructure
Develop advanced energy metering and monitoring systems to improve granularity and visibility of energy consumption.
Identify opportunities for energy optimization and operational efficiency improvements.
Data Center Technical Energy Optimization
Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to optimize the energy performance of critical data center infrastructure including:
HVAC and cooling systems
Chillers
CRAC/CRAH units
UPS and power distribution systems
Backup/emergency power generation systems
Support energy-efficient design and operation aligned with Tier III / Tier IV data center standards, as defined by the Uptime Institute.
Participate in capacity planning and ensure energy availability aligns with data center growth and expansion strategies.
Support initiatives related to optimization of cooling and power infrastructure.
Support planning and coordination related to grid connections and electrical substations, ensuring sufficient power availability for current operations and future data center capacity expansion.
Collaborate with utilities, design and construction teams, and grid operators during grid connection studies, power allocation processes, and substation infrastructure planning.
Contribute to the optimization and reliability of high-voltage electrical infrastructure, including substations, transformers, and grid interconnection points.
Energy Sustainability and Reuse Programs
Promote and implement energy efficiency initiatives across all data center facilities.
Identify and implement energy recovery and reuse opportunities.
ISO 50001 Energy Management System
Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of the ISO 50001 Energy Management System.
Coordinate/support internal and external audits to maintain ISO 50001 certification.
Collaborate with compliance and operational teams to integrate ISO 50001 requirements into operational procedures.
Develop awareness programs related to energy management best practices.
Energy Procurement and Utility Management
Maintain strong relationships with utility providers and energy suppliers.
Participate in the negotiation and management of contracts related to:
Electricity
Water
Gas
Fuel supply
Contribute to energy purchasing strategies and cost optimization.
Forecast future energy demand based on data center capacity growth and customer load projections.
Renewable Energy and Power Purchase Agreements
Evaluate Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) in Spain to support renewable energy sourcing.
Support the integration of renewable energy into the company’s energy portfolio.
Monitor energy markets and identify opportunities to secure long-term renewable energy supply.
Energy Incentives and Regulatory Programs
Manage participation in the CAE (Certificados de Ahorro Energético) framework in Spain.
Identify eligible efficiency projects and ensure proper certification and documentation.
Monitor regulatory developments affecting energy efficiency and sustainability in data centers.
Project Coordination and Stakeholder Engagement
Lead energy efficiency projects in collaboration with:
Country Leader
Data Center Operations
Design and Construction
Finance
Sustainability teams
Coordinate with external stakeholders including:
Energy utilities
Technology vendors
Regulatory authorities
Skills and Competencies Required
Technical Expertise
Strong expertise in data center energy systems, including electrical and mechanical infrastructure.
Deep understanding of:
Data center cooling technologies
Power distribution systems
Energy monitoring platforms
Experience analysing key data center energy KPIs such as PUE, WUE, and CUE.
Knowledge of grid connection processes and electrical substation infrastructure, including high-voltage distribution, transformers, and coordination with utility grid operators.
Energy Markets and Regulatory Knowledge
Strong understanding of energy markets and utility frameworks in Spain.
Knowledge and practical experience with:
Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs)
CAE energy efficiency schemes
Energy regulatory compliance.
Contracting and Supplier Management
Experience negotiating and managing contracts related to:
Electricity supply
Water supply
Gas and fuel contracts
Experience managing utility providers and energy suppliers.
Standards and Certifications
Proven experience implementing ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems.
Knowledge of data center design and operational standards such as those defined by the Uptime Institute.
Familiarity with sustainability frameworks and corporate energy reporting.
Leadership and Communication
Strong stakeholder management and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Ability to communicate complex energy concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Experience driving organizational change related to energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
Degree in Energy Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
Experience in data center, hyperscale infrastructure, or mission-critical facilities.
Native Spanish, high level of English
