This role supports the security of the institution’s technical environment by monitoring systems, investigating potential threats, and implementing and maintaining cybersecurity infrastructure. The Cybersecurity Analyst also coordinates technical security activities, responds to incidents, and provides regular reporting on security operations and service levels to management.

A significant portion of the role focuses on Cybersecurity Operations Centre (CSOC) analysis. The Cybersecurity Analyst monitors network traffic patterns to identify potential malicious activity and investigates security breaches in accordance with established procedures. The role includes reviewing user access rights and privileges, conducting threat hunting activities under the direction of the Chief Information Security Officer, and preparing reports on cybersecurity activities and incidents. The Analyst operates and helps maintain a range of security technologies including data loss prevention tools, firewall systems, endpoint protection platforms, intrusion detection and prevention systems, and cloud security infrastructure. The role also provides tertiary support for the College’s identity and access management services and remains current on emerging threats, technologies, and evolving cloud security practices.

The Cybersecurity Analyst plays an important role in improving and maintaining the College’s security architecture. This includes supporting the design and long-term planning of secure technical infrastructure, maintaining security architecture patterns for consistency, and implementing security infrastructure throughout its lifecycle. The Analyst actively participates in institutional technology initiatives and projects that align with the College’s cybersecurity and cloud computing strategies, and serves as a technical escalation point for concerns related to the College’s security architecture.

Another key responsibility involves contributing to risk assessments and security audits. The role conducts vulnerability scans, reviews application and operating system access controls, coordinates penetration testing activities, and evaluates physical security controls. The Analyst administers security assessments for systems containing institutional data to ensure compliance with established standards and to maintain a strong security posture.

The position also contributes to strengthening the College’s cybersecurity awareness and threat intelligence capabilities. This includes analyzing emerging threat intelligence, supporting security awareness initiatives, and providing recommendations for training campaigns and educational resources. The Cybersecurity Analyst collaborates with the broader post-secondary education community to share insights and guidance related to emerging security threats and best practices.

Within the area of vulnerability management and penetration testing, the Cybersecurity Analyst leads and conducts periodic vulnerability assessments and penetration tests across the College’s infrastructure.

Working in collaboration with the Chief Information Security Officer and the Associate Director, IT Infrastructure, the Analyst helps coordinate necessary configuration changes to improve system security. The role also supports periodic application penetration testing in partnership with development teams to ensure that both infrastructure and applications remain secure and compliant with institutional standards.

The Cybersecurity Analyst also contributes to the development and implementation of security automation and orchestration processes. This includes designing, installing, configuring, testing, and maintaining automated security workflows that improve efficiency and response times. The Analyst monitors the output of automation tasks, applies best practices in security orchestration, and ensures that cybersecurity services maintain optimal performance. The role may also provide consultation to project teams and deliver training to other IT staff on cybersecurity tools and processes.

As a member of IT project teams, the Cybersecurity Analyst collaborates with technical and non-technical stakeholders to support the successful delivery of technology initiatives.
