Position Overview
West Penn Heavy Haul is seeking an experienced Heavy Haul Rigger to support crane-assisted rig moves and the transportation of oversized oil and gas equipment. This role works directly with crane operators and field crews to safely rig, lift, and position heavy loads, including climbing and working at elevation on drilling rigs.
The ideal candidate has prior hands-on rigging experience, holds recognized rigging and signaling certifications, is comfortable working at heights, and demonstrates strong situational awareness in dynamic field environments.
Key Responsibilities
Assist crane operators with rigging, lifting, and positioning of heavy haul and oil & gas equipment
Select, inspect, and properly use rigging equipment including slings, shackles, chains, and hardware
Provide clear, certified hand and voice signals to crane operators
Safely climb and work at elevation, including climbing rig derricks and structures as required
Install and remove rigging from elevated positions
Verify load weight, balance, and center of gravity prior to lifts
Participate in lift planning, job safety analyses (JSAs), and pre-lift meetings
Monitor lift operations and identify unsafe conditions or changes in load behavior
Assist with ground rigging, staging, and securement between lifts
Maintain rigging equipment in safe, compliant working condition
Follow all company safety policies, site-specific rules, and OSHA regulations
Required Qualifications
Prior experience as a rigger in heavy haul, crane, oil & gas, or industrial construction environments
Ability to safely climb and work at heights, including climbing rig derricks
Strong understanding of rigging principles, load dynamics, and lift safety
Physically capable of performing demanding field work
Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
Required Certifications
One or more of the following industry-recognized certifications are required:
NCCCO Rigger Level I or Level II
NCCCO Signalperson Certification (or equivalent nationally recognized signalperson credential)
Equivalent certifications may be accepted if they meet OSHA and ANSI requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience rigging drilling rigs, oil & gas equipment, or oversized loads
Experience working with hydraulic cranes and lattice boom cranes
Familiarity with heavy haul transportation and rig move operations
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift, carry, and handle rigging equipment weighing up to 50 lbs
Ability to climb ladders, derricks, and structures safely
Comfortable working at heights and around suspended loads
Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods
Work Schedule
Flexible scheduling required, including extended shifts, weekends, overnight work, and travel based on rig move demands
