Course Code and Title:
EDTL 609 - Supporting Diverse Learners.
Current research and practice in educating students who have a variety of individual needs and strengths. The complex interplay between individual and contextual factors that impact learning in the modern classroom. Examination of abilities/disabilities, school and classroom dynamics, and teachers' roles in promoting an inclusive environment. Focus on applicable, practical skills such as curriculum design and modification, formal/informal assessment procedures, universal design for instruction, home-school collaborations, and differentiated instruction. Quebec Ministry of Education professional competencies are addressed and assessed throughout.

Teaching Qualification Requirements:
Education
• Master educator with a minimum completed MA or MEd degree in a relevant field (e.g., inclusive education, special education, educational psychology). PhD preferred.
Experience
-Expert knowledge of:
• Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), including Response to Intervention (RTI) and classroom-based interventions
• Evidence-based teaching practices that support diverse learners
• Principles of differentiated instruction, unit planning, and curriculum design (e.g., Understanding by Design)
• The etiology, characteristics, and support strategies for neurodiverse learners, including ASD, ADHD, and specific learning disabilities (SLD), as well as the development and use of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
• Research-informed teaching methods and instructional materials for inclusive classrooms
Ecological and systemic factors influencing student learning and success across school and community contexts
Quebec education frameworks, including curriculum competencies and professional practices related to inclusive education
-Ability to facilitate respectful, inclusive dialogue and support critical reflection among learners.
-Experience supporting diverse learners through classroom or school-based curriculum design, assessment, and instructional strategies.
-Experience collaborating with families, school teams, and/or community partners to support inclusive student learning and wellbeing.
-Experience teaching similar course(s)
-Experience as a master teacher/instructor in the Quebec educational system is an asset
Other
• Knowledge of the impact and experience integrating pedagogical approaches anchored to equity, diversity and inclusion
• Familiarity using myCourses, Zoom and/or other similar online platforms to facilitate quality teaching and learning experiences
• Familiarity with the application of a variety of digital teaching and learning tools
• Familiarity teaching blended classes
• Instruction in this course may be delivered remotely if indicated as required by the university.
